WHAT YOU'LL DO – Senior Analyst – Investment Performance
As a Senior Analyst in Investment Performance at Principal, you'll be instrumental in providing reliable and timely performance measurement and portfolio analytics. Your expertise will aid portfolio management and client reporting, ensuring flawless delivery and remarkable results. Ensure accurate and timely performance measurement alongside portfolio analytics to assist portfolio management and client reporting.
- Apply regulatory and operational procedures, including Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS), and maintain strong controls and documentation.
- Act as a subject matter expert (SME); independently investigate and resolve complex data and process issues and explain root causes and fixes.
- Lead or take part in projects that support new initiatives, process evaluations, and system improvements.
- Conduct ad hoc analyses and research to answer business questions and improve decision making.
Develop strong connections with internal groups—Operations, Request for Proposal (RFP), Relationship Management, Information Technology (IT)—and external collaborators including clients, boutiques, and the GIPS verifier.
Offer support and casual mentoring to junior team members.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce and control performance and analytics
- Calculate, verify, and publish portfolio and benchmark performance, attribution, characteristics/analytics, asset modeling/valuation, and risk measures with high accuracy and on-time delivery.
- Apply GIPS and internal policies; maintain evidence of controls, approvals, and audit trails.
- Identify, resolve, and clearly explain complex issues and data anomalies; serve as SME for performance activities.
- Partner with collaborators and distribute results
- Work together with Operations, RFP, Relationship Management, IT, clients, boutiques, and the GIPS verifier to gather inputs, clarify requirements, and address issues.
- Maintain accurate and timely sharing of performance, attribution, characteristics/analytics, and risk measures; explain inputs, dependencies, and data flows in straightforward language.
- SME support, procedures, and team guidance
- Serve as the primary contact for procedure questions; research issues, formulate recommendations, make independent decisions, and communicate clearly
- Guide junior team members on methods, controls, and standards.
- Continuous learning and improvement
- Deepen knowledge of Principal Global Investors (PGI) products, client needs, financial markets, portfolio/benchmark construction, and security/asset class characteristics through self-study and training.
- Proactively recommend and implement more efficient ways to produce investment data and results.
- Other duties and projects
- Perform other job-related tasks and special projects as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, economics, or business (or equivalent).
- 4–7 years of experience in investment or mutual fund operations (or related field).
- Solid knowledge of GIPS, financial markets, investment strategies, security types, risk statistics, investment performance, characteristics/analytics, and attribution methodologies.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Diligent, organized, and reliable under deadlines. Operate with high integrity and follow all relevant laws, regulations, and company policies.
- Tools/Tech: Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word; performance measurement/attribution/risk platforms (TBD); data repositories/warehouses (TBD); reporting/visualization tools (TBD).

- Ability to independently complete complex calculations, analyze trends, and explain drivers and anomalies to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Practical application of GIPS and performance attribution concepts in daily production and control environments.
- Relationship building and collaboration across Operations, IT, client-facing teams, boutiques, and external verifiers.
- Experience managing or supporting projects, process assessments, and system improvements; adaptability to change and continuous development.
- Willingness to mentor junior team members and share guidelines.
