Job Description: SQL Server Database Administrator

Role: SQL Server Database Administrator | Department: IT / Infrastructure / Application Support

Role Summary

The SQL Server Database Administrator is responsible for managing, maintaining, securing, and optimizing Microsoft SQL Server database environments across development, test, UAT, and production systems. The role ensures database availability, performance, integrity, backup, recovery, and security while supporting business-critical applications and working closely with infrastructure, application, security, and business teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, administer, upgrade, and patch Microsoft SQL Server instances, databases, and related components.
  • Monitor database health, availability, performance, capacity, storage utilization, and error logs on a regular basis.
  • Implement and maintain backup, restore, disaster recovery, and high-availability strategies to ensure business continuity.
  • Perform performance tuning for SQL queries, stored procedures, indexes, execution plans, jobs, and database configurations.
  • Manage database security including user access, roles, permissions, authentication, encryption, and audit requirements.
  • Support database refresh, migration, replication, log shipping, clustering, Always On availability groups, and failover activities.
  • Work with application development and support teams to troubleshoot database issues and improve application performance.
  • Create, maintain, and review database maintenance plans, SQL Agent jobs, alerts, schedules, and automation scripts.
  • Ensure data integrity through regular DBCC checks, consistency validation, index maintenance, and statistics updates.
  • Participate in change management, incident management, problem management, and root cause analysis for database-related issues.
  • Maintain technical documentation, SOPs, configuration records, capacity reports, and operational runbooks.
  • Support compliance, audit, vulnerability remediation, database hardening, patch management, and security review activities.
  • Provide on-call or after-hours support for production incidents, planned maintenance, and critical business operations when required.

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong hands-on experience in Microsoft SQL Server administration.
  • Good knowledge of T-SQL, stored procedures, functions, triggers, views, indexing, and query optimization.
  • Experience with SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Agent, SQL Profiler, Extended Events, and performance monitoring tools.
  • Knowledge of backup and recovery models, point-in-time recovery, database restores, and disaster recovery testing.
  • Experience with high-availability technologies such as Always On Availability Groups, failover clustering, replication, mirroring, or log shipping.
  • Understanding of Windows Server, Active Directory authentication, storage, networking, and server performance fundamentals.
  • Knowledge of database security, encryption, auditing, access control, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience in database migration, upgrade planning, patching, capacity planning, and environment refresh activities.
  • Exposure to PowerShell scripting, automation, monitoring tools, and ticketing/change management systems is preferred.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 7+ years of relevant experience in SQL Server database administration, depending on role seniority.
  • Experience supporting production databases in enterprise environments with defined SLAs.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate with infrastructure, application, security, and business teams.

Preferred Certifications

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate.
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate or equivalent SQL Server certification.
  • ITIL Foundation certification is an added advantage.
