Key Responsibilities:
Piping System Design & Engineering:
- Lead the design and layout of piping systems including routing, supports, and material selection in compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
- Prepare and review piping deliverables such as P&IDs, isometric drawings, piping plans, GA drawings, and MTOs (Material Take-Offs).
- Ensure designs account for operability, maintainability, safety, and constructability.
Technical Analysis & Problem Solving:
- Perform detailed pipe stress analysis using tools like CAESAR II or AutoPIPE to evaluate flexibility, thermal expansion, and loading conditions.
- Review vendor documents, data sheets, and coordinate with equipment teams to ensure proper piping interfaces.
- Solve complex piping challenges related to layout, space constraints, thermal effects, and equipment alignment.
Code & Standards Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with international codes and standards such as ASME B31.3/B31.1, API, ASTM, and client-specific requirements.
- Implement best practices in piping design, supporting QA/QC checks, and leading internal audits or reviews.
Coordination & Collaboration:
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines (process, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical) to ensure piping designs integrate smoothly with overall plant or facility layout.
- Participate in model reviews (e.g., 30%, 60%, 90%) and lead clash detection resolution using tools like Navisworks or SmartPlant Review.
Project Execution & Support:
- Support project managers in planning, budgeting, and scheduling of piping engineering activities.
- Review and approve vendor piping drawings and assist in technical bid evaluations (TBEs).
- Support site construction and commissioning teams in resolving field issues and RFIs related to piping.
Innovation & Best Practices:
- Introduce advanced tools, automation techniques, or design workflows to enhance piping design efficiency and accuracy.
- Support digital initiatives such as 3D modeling, BIM integration, or laser scanning implementation in retrofit projects.
Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing:
- Mentor junior engineers and designers, providing technical direction and quality oversight.
- Share domain knowledge, conduct training sessions, and contribute to continuous improvement in piping engineering practices.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. Master's degree preferred.
- Experience: 10+ years of experience in piping design and engineering in EPC or consulting organizations, with demonstrated success in handling complex projects.
- Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
- Deep understanding of piping codes and standards (ASME, API, ANSI, ASTM).
- Proficiency in software tools like CAESAR II, AutoCAD Plant 3D, SmartPlant 3D, E3D, or PDMS.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in piping layout, stress, and support design.
- Excellent coordination skills with interdisciplinary teams.
- Clear and effective communication, including technical writing and report preparation.
- Strong documentation and quality control abilities.
- Capable of handling multiple projects and tight deadlines.
