POSITION TITLE: Solid Waste Equipment Operator
DEPARTMENT: Public Works/Landfill
REPORTS TO: Landfill Foreman
RATE OF PAY: $26.88 per hour (under collective bargaining)
BENEFITS: 3 Medical plans to choose from, Dental, Vision, Pension, Deferred Compensation, 11 Holidays, 1 Floating Holiday, Vacation, and Sick leave.
Summary
This is responsible solid waste disposal work involving, on a continued basis, the safe, efficient, and skilled operation and maintenance of solid waste disposal equipment and the collection of disposal fees. Work of this class requires the operation of a dozer, compactor, trucks, and scraper. Work will require employee of this class to exercise considerable initiative in the completion of assignments which normally require skilled equipment operation, and maintenance in an unfavorable work environment.
Work is performed on the landfill site requiring exposure to an unfavorable, odorous environment with exposure to municipal solid waste. Work is generally conducted outdoors and therefore requires working in various weather conditions.
Work is also preformed off site at recycling locations throughout the county.
Supervision Exercised And Received
Supervision is not a normal responsibility of position of this class.
Work will be assigned and evaluated by the solid waste supervisor and/or the solid waste foreman while in progress and upon completion for conformance with established standards.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (Duties include but are not limited to):
- Operates solid waste disposal equipment performing a variety of duties requiring both skill and knowledge of safe and efficient operation techniques.
- Performs prevention maintenance work on equipment; performs a variety of other manual activities as required; performs caretaking duties at the landfill site.
- Maintains, drops off and picks up offsite recycling containers at locations throughout the county, occasionally collects disposal fees through computerized data entry, makes change as necessary and prints out receipts for revenue.
- Occasionally fills in at the Moderate Risk Waste Facility.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (include but are not limited to):
- Knowledge of the care, maintenance and safe operation of assigned equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.
- Knowledge of the practices, methods and materials used in solid waste disposal activities.
- Ability to operate equipment skillfully, safely and in conformance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Ability to detect needed repairs and make necessary, simple adjustments to equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to work independently in the performance of regularly assigned duties.
- Physical ability to perform manual tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to process cash transactions in an accurate manner.
Essential Functions
- The ability to read, write, speak and comprehend the English language.
- Physical abilities include standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time, reaching, bending, stooping, squatting, pulling and frequent lifting up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally lifting up to one hundred (100) pounds.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions.
Experience, Education And Training
One (1) year of equipment operation experience providing a familiarity with the safe operation of heavy equipment:

Substituting on a month-to-month basis, any experience, education or training which would provide the level of knowledge and ability required.
Mandatory Qualifications
Possession of a valid driver's license with CDL Class B/Air Brake Endorsement and a valid first aid card within three (3) months.
