Job Description

Summary
The Backend Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining cloud-native, event-driven backend services that power the Company&rsquos Dynamic Service Options platform. This role focuses on building highly scalable, reactive applications using Java, Spring Boot Web Flux, PostgreSQL, and AWS services. The successful candidate will work across data authoring and delivery platforms, developing APIs, asynchronous processing workflows, database solutions, cloud infrastructure, and observability capabilities while ensuring secure, resilient, and high-performing systems.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain reactive REST APIs using Spring Boot Web Flux and Project Reactor with fully non-blocking request processing.
  • Develop and enhance event-driven background services running on AWS Lambda and triggered through SQS FIFO queues and Event Bridge schedules.
  • Design, model, and optimize PostgreSQL databases using Spring Data R2DBC for dynamic query generation.
  • Create and maintain Flyway database migrations while ensuring backward compatibility and validation through CI pipelines.
  • Support a multi-module Gradle architecture, maintaining proper separation between shared libraries, API services, and Lambda workers.
  • Design and maintain Open API-first services, including generated specifications, standardized responses, and consistent error handling.
  • Integrate applications with external platforms and services including cloud data warehouses, internal product services, Amazon S3, Secrets Manager, and DynamoDB.
  • Implement coaching, query optimization, and performance improvements to support ingestion and reporting workloads.
  • Build observability solutions using Open Telemetry, structured logging, distributed tracing, and performance metrics.
  • Develop and maintain automated unit and integration tests using JUnit 5, Mockito, and Reactor testing frameworks.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, containerization, image publishing, artifact packaging, and cloud deployments.
  • Apply secure development practices, including OAuth2 token validation, authorization controls, IAM policies, secrets management, and input validation.
  • Participate in code reviews, enforce engineering standards, and mentor team members on reactive programming and cloud-native architectures.
  • Support troubleshooting, debugging, and operational excellence across production environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver features from design through deployment and monitoring.

Education Requirements
  • Bachelor&rsquos degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Experience Requirements
  • 3+ years of hands-on backend engineering experience.
  • 1+ year of experience building cloud-native, event-driven applications on AWS.
  • Experience developing scalable backend systems using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Experience working with reactive programming concepts and asynchronous architecture.
  • Experience with relational databases, schema management, and database optimization.
  • Experience contributing to CI/CD pipelines and cloud deployments.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments.

Required Skills
  • Java 17+ and modern Java language features.
  • Spring Boot, Spring Web Flux, and Spring Security.
  • Project Reactor, including Mono, Flux, error handling, retry, and backpressure.
  • Gradle multi-module builds, Lombok, and Jackson.
  • PostgreSQL schema design, indexing, query tuning, and query-plan analysis.
  • Spring Data R2DBC or equivalent reactive data access frameworks.
  • jOOQ or comparable type-safe SQL tooling.
  • Flyway or Liquibase database migration tools.
  • AWS SDK v2 asynchronous clients or Spring Cloud AWS.
  • Infrastructure as Code using CloudFormation or equivalent technologies.
  • Open API 3, REST API design standards, versioning, validation, and error-handling practices.
  • JUnit 5, Mockito, Spring Boot Test, Reactor Test, and automated testing methodologies.
  • Docker, Docker Compose, Git, pull-request workflows, and GitHub Actions or comparable CI/CD tools.
  • SonarQube or similar static code analysis platforms.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts including idempotency, retry, timeouts, eventual consistency, and failure handling.
  • Excellent analytical, debugging, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Skills
  • Open Telemetry and distributed tracing technologies.
  • Grafana, Tempo, Prometheus, or Loki monitoring platforms.
  • Experience with Snowflake or other cloud-based data warehouses.
  • Large-scale data ingestion and processing pipelines.
  • Spring Cloud Function and AWS Lambda optimization techniques.
  • Local Stack for local AWS service emulation.
  • Serverless cost optimization and JVM performance tuning.
  • Enterprise single sign-on solutions, OAuth2 introspection, and role-based access control services.
  • Knowledge of secure coding practices and OWASP Top 10 principles.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum delivery methodologies and trunk-based development practices.
