About the Charter and the Role
Insight is an end-to-end managed real time data processing platform designed to unify and aggregate opaque, distributed data sources across Amazon Prime benefits, making real-time data easily accessible through low-latency APIs. The platform ingests near real-time event streams, processes and enriches raw data, and provides pre-computed datasets with aggregations to enable business and technology teams to make data-driven decisions without the overhead of native computation or complex multi-source queries. Insight powers critical Prime use cases including value communication on customer-facing experiences, member retention programs and subscription management. By prioritizing data integrity, freshness, security, and ease-of-use, Insight reduces project overhead costs and enables clients to access curated real-time signals for targeted customer journeys-such as messaging customers based on their latest Prime Video usage or purchase history. The platform currently serves 25 active clients across US, EU, and FE regions and delivering 5 million notifications daily. As a Software Development Manager, you will independently lead a team of software engineers to deliver technology solutions that power the Insight platform. This role requires a leader to build technology solutions for business problems or strategies that may not yet be fully defined
Key Responsibilities
. Independently manage a team of Software Development Engineers (SDEs), hiring the right mix of skills to accomplish team goals.
. Hire, develop, and promote SDEs up to Level 6, delegating appropriately based on individual strengths and development objectives
. Create development plans that include collaborative goal-setting, coaching, and strategic project assignments
. Demonstrate breadth and depth of knowledge in software development, quality, and technical program management
. Understand system design fundamentals including data modelling, data store choices, and non-functional requirements (security, scaling, performance, monitoring, auditing)
. Recognize and adopt best practices in engineering, solving problems at their root while understanding broader context
. Proactively identify risks and bring them to the attention of your manager, customers, and stakeholders with mitigation plans before they become roadblocks
. Communicate ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing, to all types of audiences
. Write narratives, PR/FAQs, and other strategic documentation
. Work successfully with customers, leaders, and other engineering teams
. Drive simplification and optimization of project delivery
. Prioritize operational excellence, determining appropriate metrics to track and measure customer impact
Required Qualifications
Experience
. 5+ years of people management experience in software development
. At least 5 years of software development experience
. Proven track record leading software engineering teams through full development lifecycle
. Experience managing teams building or solving complex software problems at the architectural level
. Demonstrated ability to execute both strategically and tactically
Technical Skills
. Solid understanding of design approaches and industry technologies
. Understanding of overall system architecture and ability to facilitate technical discussions
. Ability to make trade-offs balancing resourcing, business goals, user experience, dependency impacts, efficiency, and availability
. Experience with software development methodologies and modern programming languages
. Knowledge of distributed systems, storage systems, and relational databases[53][55]
Preferred Qualifications
. Experience with building products and services for data analytics and insights platforms
. Knowledge of data pipeline technologies and ETL frameworks
. Previous experience managing Software-as-a-Service technology products
. Understanding of business intelligence and analytics domains
. Excellent communication skills with ability to influence others internally and externally
. Ability to deliver initiatives from conception through completion
. Strong attention to detail and proactive self-starter mentality
- 7+ years of engineering experience
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
