Job Description

The Configuration Management Inventory BizOps team is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer (BMC Discovery Admin) with strong Linux/Unix System administration expertise. This role is crucial for maintaining and evolving our BMC Discovery infrastructure, leading innovative solutions across diverse network topologies (on-premise, hybrid, and cloud), and ensuring the production readiness of our platforms. You'll partner closely with development teams, advocating for DevOps transformations through tooling and best practices, and continuously improving the customer experience. Role

As a Site Reliability Engineer (BMC Discovery Admin), you will:

  • Provide technical leadership and support to a distributed team managing globally distributed infrastructure.
  • Configure, deploy, and administer Linux-based systems across multiple environments.
  • Administer the BMC Discovery Software, serving as the primary tool for Configuration Management Inventory collection across various IT infrastructures.
  • Troubleshoot network connectivity and/or credential issues, including SSH to Linux/Unix, WMI Query and PowerShell to Windows, SNMP to network devices, and API connections to cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Discuss, plan, and manage change implementation for upgrades, releases, migrations, and other maintenance activities.
  • Monitor and respond to system alerts and failures promptly and effectively.
  • Develop plans to improve quality for every project impacting the platform.
  • Ensure platform procedures are developed with best practices and standards and are thoroughly documented.
  • Help innovate new methodologies to enhance Business Operations.
  • Coach junior-level employees on Business Operations best practices.
  • Engage in and improve the entire lifecycle of services from inception and design, through deployment, operation, and refinement.
  • Scale systems sustainably through mechanisms like automation and evolve systems by advocating for changes that improve reliability and velocity.
  • Practice sustainable incident response and conduct blameless postmortems.
  • Take a holistic approach to problem-solving, connecting the dots across the technology stack during production events to optimize Mean Time To Recover (MTTR).

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Network Engineering, code development, or equivalent practical experience (at least four years).
  • Systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with strong communication skills and a sense of ownership and drive.
  • Experience in dealing with difficult situations and making decisions with a sense of urgency.
  • Appetite for change and pushing the boundaries of what can be done with automation.
  • Security-first mentality is critical in all actions.
  • Customer-first mentality (our entire enterprise is our customer base).
  • At least 5 years of experience in CVILL19.
  • A Can-Do attitude and a passion for improving processes and automation.
  • Extensive experience working across global development, operations, and product teams to prioritize needs and build strong relationships.
  • Extensive experience with Linux operating systems (such as CentOS, RHEL, OEL, Ubuntu).
  • Ideal experience includes BMC Discovery administration.
  • SNMP walk and MIB-tree review experience a plus.
  • Understanding of ITIL basics and the principles of change control management is ideal.
  • Experience with IT Service Management (ITSM) tools such as Remedy, ServiceNow, etc., is ideal.
  • Configuration Management Database (CMDB) experience is ideal.
  • CompTIA Security+ or other Linux and/or network administration certifications are ideal.
  • Experience with deployment/configuration management and CI/CD and release tools such as Chef, Jenkins, Ansible, Puppet, XL Release (XLR), Octopus, Satellite, Flow, etc.
  • Experience with scripting technologies such as Bash, Python, Perl, PowerShell, etc.
  • Understanding of Windows Server 2012+ and domains.
  • Understanding of software and package inventory collection basics.
  • Experience supporting Apache WebServer and/or middleware application servers and Java RunTime Environments (Tomcat, WebSphere, WebLogic, JBoss, etc.).
  • Understanding of common security architecture designs.
  • Basic understanding of SSL/TLS and how certificates work.
  • Understanding of source code management under a version control system like Git.
  • Understanding of networking methodologies at scale.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies.
  • Experience with monitoring solutions such as Splunk, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, Nagios, Zabbix, etc.
  • Understanding of cloud methodologies and services, particularly AWS and Azure.
  • Remote server diagnostics and troubleshooting required.
  • Understanding of patch/lifecycle management of Linux and Windows endpoints required.
  • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) are a plus.

Preferred Skills :

  • BMC Discovery Certification.
  • 5+ years of experience in BMC Discovery platform, architecture & attribute management.
  • Knowledge of Regular Expressions (REGx) in pattern matching.
  • Strong working knowledge of BMC Discovery/Application Discovery and Dependency Mapping (ADDM) infrastructure and Administration.
  • Experience with Splunk, Dynatrace, Docker, Kubernetes is a plus.
  • REST API Integration Experience (familiar with curl, swagger, request/payload management).
  • Knowledge of integrations of BMC Discovery with a CMDB (Remedy/ServiceNow, etc.) and other applications.
  • Knowledge of SAAM/CAM Concepts a plus.
