Our team enables scalable, high-quality data services that support key Elsevier products such as
Scopus, LeapSpace, SciVal, Reaxys, and other leading research solutions used globally.
We operate at the intersection of
data engineering, platform services, and supplier ecosystem management, ensuring that data products are reliable, governed, and continuously improving.
About the Role:-
Data Modeling is a senior technical leader within the Data Operations function, responsible for defining and advancing structured data models, semantic frameworks, and scalable AI-enabled processing workflows. This role sets technical standards for data modeling, Knowledge Graph development, and LLM operationalization across Data Operations. The position ensures that complex business, product, and operational requirements are translated into governed, production-ready data structures and interoperable processing pipelines.
Responsibilities:-
Content Transformation & Data Standards Leadership
- Define and govern structured content standards and transformation specifications across Data Operations.
- Design scalable content models and conversion frameworks across XML, DTD, XSD, JSON, JSON-LD, HTML5, and related structured formats.
- Establish canonical content principles, metadata structures, naming conventions, and normalization standards to ensure consistency and interoperability.
- Develop reusable transformation rules and patterns that support automated, high-volume content processing.
- Ensure content standards are extensible, governed, and aligned with downstream product, platform, analytics, and AI requirements.
XML & Content Transformation Engineering
- Design and optimize end-to-end content transformation workflows covering ingestion, parsing, normalization, enrichment, validation, conversion, and structured output delivery.
- Define and review transformation logic using XSLT and XPath, including complex mappings, conditional rules, and exception handling.
- Lead schema and format conversion between XML, JSON, JSON-LD, HTML5, and other structured or semi-structured formats.
- Develop or review scripts for data conversion, validation, reconciliation, and workflow automation using suitable scripting languages.
- Support large-scale content migration, remediation, and legacy-format modernization initiatives.
- Ensure transformation solutions are maintainable, testable, traceable, and suitable for production-scale operations.
Technical Specification & Documentation
- Lead the preparation of comprehensive technical and functional specifications for content transformation, metadata processing, and workflow implementation.
- Produce schema definitions, data-mapping documents, transformation rules, validation specifications, data dictionaries, workflow diagrams, and implementation guides.
- Translate business and product requirements into clear, executable technical documentation for Technology, Operations, and partner teams.
- Maintain end-to-end traceability between requirements, specifications, test scenarios, defects, and production outputs.
- Define documentation standards and review controls to ensure accuracy, completeness, consistency, and long-term maintainability.
Testing, Validation & Quality Assurance
- Define test strategies and acceptance criteria for complex content-transformation and data-conversion initiatives.
- Lead functional, integration, regression, data-validation, and user acceptance testing across structured content workflows.
- Design test datasets and validation scenarios covering standard, boundary, exception, and high-volume processing conditions.
- Establish schema validation, reconciliation, defect management, root-cause analysis, and quality-control frameworks.
- Use data-driven analysis to identify transformation defects, recurring error patterns, and opportunities for quality improvement and automation.
Program Delivery & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Lead enterprise content-transformation initiatives across Product, Technology, Data Operations, and external partners.
- Coordinate scope, timelines, dependencies, risks, testing, implementation, and operational-readiness activities across multiple workstreams.
- Act as the senior technical bridge between business stakeholders and delivery teams, ensuring shared understanding of requirements and expected outcomes.
- Conduct impact assessments for new formats, schema changes, workflow enhancements, migrations, and system integrations.
- Drive structured governance through status reporting, issue escalation, decision tracking, and stakeholder communication.
- Support partner onboarding and ensure external deliveries comply with approved specifications, quality standards, and implementation plans.
Operational Readiness & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure new transformation workflows are operationally ready, documented, measurable, and supported before production rollout.
- Identify opportunities to simplify processing, reduce manual intervention, improve throughput, and lower conversion-related defects and rework.
- Define operational KPIs and use analytics to monitor transformation quality, processing performance, exceptions, and service stability.
- Drive reusable standards, templates, automation components, and lessons learned across Data Operations.
- Provide subject-matter guidance and mentoring to analysts, testers, operations specialists, and partner teams.
AI and Future-Ready Content Enablement
- Support the design of AI-ready structured content and metadata frameworks for GenAI and LLM-enabled processing.
- Collaborate with AI and Product teams to prepare structured content for enrichment, retrieval, classification, and automated validation use cases.
- Contribute to future data-formatting requirements, including JSON-LD, semantic metadata, and interoperable content models.
- Evaluate AI-assisted opportunities in content conversion, specification analysis, quality validation, and exception handling, with appropriate human review and governance.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
- 8–12 years of experience in content transformation, structured data processing, XML technologies, content engineering, or large-scale data operations.
- Strong hands-on experience with XML, DTD, XSD, XSLT, XPath, JSON, and structured content conversion.
- Demonstrated experience writing detailed technical specifications, data mappings, transformation rules, and workflow documentation.
- Proven experience leading testing, implementation, migration, or transformation initiatives across cross-functional teams.
