A Level 2 (L2) Server Migration Engineer acts as a technical specialist responsible for executing the transfer of server workloads (physical-to-physical, physical-to-virtual, or to cloud) while ensuring minimal downtime, data integrity, and application performance. They typically operate with 36+ years of experience, acting as an escalation point from L1 support.
Key Responsibilities
- Migration Planning & Execution: Perform P2V (Physical-to-Virtual), V2V (Virtual-to-Virtual), and data center migrations using tools like VMware Converter, Zerto, Azure Migrate, or AWS Application Migration Service.
- Infrastructure Support: Install, configure, and troubleshoot Windows (2016/2019/2022) or Linux servers, Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP.
- Documentation: Create and maintain migration runbooks, technical design documents, and post-migration validation reports.
- Ticketing & Escalation: Manage L2 migration tickets in ITSM tools like ServiceNow or JIRA, handling complex issues before escalating to L3/SMEs.
- Performance Monitoring: Conduct pre-migration assessments and post-migration checks to ensure system stability and performance.
- Backup & Decommissioning: Ensure proper backup of servers before migration and assist with decommissioning old hardware/storage.

Technical Skills Requirements
- OS Expertise: Strong knowledge of Windows Server 2012/2016/2019/2022 and/or Linux.
- Virtualization: Deep understanding of VMware ESXi, vCenter, and Hyper-V.
- Migration Tools: Experience with migration tools such as Zerto, RackWare, ShareGate, AvePoint, or BitTitan.
- Cloud Platforms: Familiarity with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud migration services.
- Storage & Networking: Understanding of SAN, NAS, VLANs, and firewall rules.
