Role Overview As a Senior Yugabyte Specialist in Backend Engineering, you will join the Product & Platform Development team to design, scale, and maintain high-performance, distributed server-side systems. Operating in a remote capacity, you will take complete ownership of business-driven data management within live YugabyteDB environments, driving system performance, optimizing database clusters, and mentoring engineering peers across microservice architectures.
Key Responsibilities
- Distributed Database Management: Take ownership of live YugabyteDB environments, optimizing usage, managing database clusters, and partnering with Infrastructure teams to ensure high availability and scalability.
- Feature Engineering & Architecture: Design, build, and deploy production-grade backend services using Java or Clojure capable of handling massive request volumes with strong performance guarantees.
- System Optimization: Identify architectural bottlenecks, conduct performance benchmarking, and execute failure detection strategies across POSIX-compliant deployment environments (macOS/Linux).
- Technical Leadership: Conduct code and system design reviews, lead cross-functional projects across engineering, QA, and operations, and participate in hiring and onboarding initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: 6 to 10 years of backend engineering experience focused on medium-to-large-scale server-side software development.
- Database & Systems Expertise: Hands-on operational experience running YugabyteDB at scale within a distributed, microservices-based setup.
- Core Technical Stack: Advanced production experience with backend languages—specifically Java or Clojure—and deep familiarity with computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, time complexity).
- Operating Systems & CLI: Proficient with POSIX-compliant platforms (GNU/Linux deployments, macOS dev) and comfortable using command-line tools for daily administration.
- Education & Soft Skills: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or equivalent practical experience), strong communication skills, and a track record of coaching and mentoring engineers.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Deep expertise in functional programming principles, specifically using Clojure.
- Exposure to project management practices and enterprise delivery frameworks.
