The Medical Assessment Unit/OOHs services at the Vale of Leven are front door unscheduled care facilities accepting patients via 999,GP referral, NHS 24 and self presentation with acute medical conditions 24/7. During the out of hours period providing care for minor illness and minor injury of all age groups. This service requires skilled nurse practitioners who are able to provide emergency care without direct nursing or medical supervision. The senior nurse role requires staff to make autonomous clinical and professional decisions on life threatening patient conditions. The post holder performs in-depth clinical assessments of acutely unwell patients and initiates investigations acting independently on the results from these clinical investigations using their experience to manage the patient's condition. Experience, knowledge and skills in minor injury treatments and the care of children are essential.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic nurse (Band 6) to join our team in the Medical Assessment Unit/Out of Hours Service at the Vale of Leven Hospital
- The shift pattern for this post is rotational day and night shifts
Key Responsibilities
- Assesses, plans implements and evaluates programmes of emergency care with reference to patients, without direct supervision
- Provides highest standard of care by using evidence-based practice
- Co-ordinates the provision of seamless care for patients from admission to discharge by utilising efficient verbal and written communication practices with all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team/Primary Care Services and Carers
- Required to act as Team Leader on a regular basis taking responsibility for a defined group of patients within clinical specialty and to supervise and support junior staff
- Provides senior cover and manages the unit/department area in the absence of the Unit Manager
- In conjunction with the senior nurse ensures that nursing resource is utilised efficiently by managing on duty rosters, short notice sickness absence and manpower resources to comply with agreed policy and procedure
- Ensures effective use of unit resources including stores, supplies and medicines
- Provides teaching, guidance, supervision and support for junior staff (qualified and unqualified) including junior medical staff
- Assists the senior nurse in the development of unit based orientation and education programmes for newly qualified staff and student nurses and acts as mentor/preceptor as required
- Ensures ongoing personal professional development in line with specialty
- Maintains effective communication with patients relatives and other members of multidisciplinary team to ensure that appropriate communication is shared and patients needs are met
- Ensures that all written documentation within the unit area is clear, concise, timely and complies with the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping
- Reports all accidents/incidents/complaints involving patients, carers and staff to the senior nurse and commence enquiries or documentation as necessary

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- A minimum of five years post registration experience gained in an acute medical or accident and Emergency environment
- Theoretical knowledge at post graduate level and experience in performing in-depth clinical assessments including blood tests, ECG and arterial blood gas sampling
- Specialist skills in Advanced Life Support and Paediatric Life Support gained through on-the-job training and formal resuscitation training.
- Skills the management of wounds/injuries.
- Further specialist skills in conducting arterial blood gas sampling which requires specialist knowledge in the technique
- The ability to administer medications in line with Patient Group Directives (PGDs) independently. This is underpinned by specialist knowledge of medicines in managing life threatening conditions at post registration level
- Agreement to flexible shift working
