Job Summary:

Chargebee is looking for an inspirational Senior Staff Engineer to build the next-generation AI-powered CPQ. This role will shape how customers create quotes, automate sales processes, and interact with Chargebee using AI. This team builds best-in-class native CPQ that integrates with enterprise platforms such as Salesforce and HubSpot, simplifying sales workflows.

This role requires a blend of strong technical expertise, exceptional system design skills, an AI-Native view, and a passion for leading and mentoring engineering teams. As a Senior Staff Engineer, you will oversee the development and delivery of key product features, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful execution of innovative, customer-focused solutions. Your role will involve both architectural and thought leadership and hands-on technical contributions to ensure the team delivers scalable, high-quality products that meet business objectives. There will be a clear focus on building AI Native products, so experience in building them is ideal, but otherwise the ability to learn on the job and upskill quickly is mandatory

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the key responsibilities include:

• As an owner of a portfolio, you will build, inspire, and grow talented engineering teams that are responsible for designing and building end-to-end product capabilities for Chargebee's CPQ and SLG capabilities.
• You will work with product management and engineering teams to influence key decisions on the architecture and implementation of scalable, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions.
• You will be expected to bring thought leadership to advance the overall state of technology and customer focus for the entire engineering organization.
• Lead by example through hands-on coding when necessary, and inspire your team with your technical expertise.
• Directly responsible for the career advancement of the engineers at various stages of their career growth.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Solid experience in building and maintaining B2C and B2B enterprise-grade distributed backend systems.
• Strong knowledge of Java, Distributed Systems that operate at high scale, RESTful APIs, scheduled jobs, OLTP databases, and JavaScript frameworks like React.
• You're passionate about AI-powered automation and curious about how agentic approaches can transform enterprise workflows.
• Monitoring at the enterprise scale level using the latest tools.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems architecture and industry best practices
• Experience creating/supporting production software/systems and a proven track record of identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks for production systems.
• Ability to identify problems with requirements, identify alternatives, and help your team navigate through these issues.
• You can balance pragmatism with vision, delivering incremental value today while laying the foundation for future scale.
• You thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments and can rally teams around complex technical missions.

Must haves:

• 12+ years of proven experience in designing enterprise-scale SaaS platforms
• Track record of building/scaling and managing high-performing teams for at least 2 years.
• Added points if you have been a founder / CTO / founding engineer, etc. of a startup and have hustled/seen scale within the company.
• Hands-on engineer who can lead by example.
• Demonstrated success building a culture of innovation, ownership, accountability, and customer focus
• Good communication and presentation skills with the ability to interact with different cross-functional teams of varying levels.
• Experience in building and scaling microservices
• Expected to be a role model for young engineers, have a strong sense of code quality, and enforce code quality within the team.
