Job Description
We're hiring a Senior Full Stack Engineer who can take a messy problem, break it down, and design a system that holds up at scale. You'll build backend services in Java and Node.js and the web interfaces that sit on them, for products used by millions of learners and thousands of enterprise customers.
This is a hands-on role with real architectural ownership. You'll write production code every week, and you'll also shape how our services are designed, split, and evolved.
What you'll do
• Design, build, and own end-to-end features across Java (Spring Boot) and Node.js services and React front ends.
• Turn ambiguous product and business problems into clear technical designs, with written trade-offs, before writing code.
• Contribute to architecture decisions: service boundaries, API contracts, data models, caching, and event-driven flows.
• Build scalable, secure REST and event-based APIs, and integrate with third-party platforms (payments, CRM, LMS, communication).
• Improve performance, reliability, and observability of production systems; find and fix bottlenecks in code, queries, and infrastructure.
• Write clean, tested, maintainable code and raise the bar through design reviews and code reviews.
• Debug complex production issues across services, and drive root-cause fixes rather than patches.
• Mentor engineers on problem solving, design thinking, and engineering practices.
• Work closely with Product, Design, QA, and DevOps to ship reliably and iterate quickly.
Must-have skills
Problem solving and architecture
• Strong data structures, algorithms, and analytical problem solving; you can reason about complexity and edge cases out loud.
• Proven experience designing distributed systems: microservices vs. modular monolith, sync vs. async, consistency, idempotency, and failure handling.
• Solid grasp of design patterns, SOLID, domain-driven design basics, and clean API design.
• Ability to write and defend a design doc or ADR with clear trade-offs.
AI-native engineering
• Hands-on, daily use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor across the development lifecycle: design, coding, refactoring, testing, debugging, and code review.
• Able to break work into well-scoped tasks for AI agents, write effective prompts and context files, and review generated code critically for correctness, security, and maintainability.
• Track record of using AI tools to measurably speed up delivery, and of sharing those practices with the team.
Backend
• 4+ years building production backends in Java (11+/17, Spring Boot) and Node.js with TypeScript (Express or NestJS): REST APIs, Spring Data/JPA, security, async patterns and the event loop, and testing.
• Relational databases (MySQL or PostgreSQL): schema design, indexing, query tuning.
• NoSQL (MongoDB) and caching (Redis).
• Messaging or streaming (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or AWS SQS/SNS).
Frontend
• Working proficiency in React, modern JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
• Understanding of web performance, state management, and SSR basics (Next.js a plus).
Engineering practice
• Cloud experience, preferably AWS (EC2/ECS, Lambda, RDS, S3, CloudFront).
• Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and Git-based workflows.
• Unit, integration, and contract testing; comfort with monitoring and logging tools.
• Clear written and verbal communication.
Good to have
• Experience in EdTech, e-commerce, or other high-traffic consumer or B2B SaaS platforms.
• Multi-tenant SaaS architecture and enterprise integrations (SSO/SAML/OIDC, LTI).
• Infrastructure as code (Terraform or CloudFormation) and Kubernetes.
• GraphQL, gRPC, or WebSockets.
• Experience building product features on LLM APIs (RAG, agents, evaluations).
• Open-source contributions, tech blogs, or talks.
