Senior Software Engineer

About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to design, build, and optimize scalable data platforms on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The ideal candidate will have strong handson expertise in modern data engineering tools, distributed processing (Spark/PySpark), orchestration, and growing exposure to GenAI-driven data solutions. This role requires excellent problemsolving capabilities and strong communication skills to work with crossfunctional teams.

In this role, you will:

• Lead moderately complex initiatives within Technology and contribute to large scale data processing framework initiatives related to enterprise strategy deliverables
• Build and maintain optimized and highly available data pipelines that facilitate deeper analysis and reporting
• Review and analyze moderately complex business, operational or technical challenges that require an in-depth evaluation of variable factors
• Oversee the data integration work, including developing a data model, maintaining a data warehouse and analytics environment, and writing scripts for data integration and analysis
• Resolve moderately complex issues and lead teams to meet data engineering deliverables while leveraging solid understanding of data information policies, procedures and compliance requirements
• Collaborate and consult with colleagues and managers to resolve data engineering issues and achieve strategic goals

Required Qualifications:

• 4+ years of Data Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education

Desired Qualifications:

• Design, develop, and maintain end-to-end data pipelines on GCP for batch and nearrealtime processing.
• Build and manage data lakes using Dataplex and BigQuery and ETL tools Abiniito.
• Develop scalable data processing solutions using Spark and PySpark and AbInitio.
• Implement workflow orchestration using Cloud Composer (Airflow) and/or Ab Initio.
• Optimize SQL queries and data models for performance, cost, and reliability.
• Write and maintain Unix shell scripts for automation and operational tasks.
• Ensure data quality, lineage, governance, and security using GCP best practices.
• Collaborate with analytics, data science, and business teams to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, and performance tuning.
• Apply GenAI capabilities (LLMs, embeddings, vector stores, prompt engineering) to enhance data processing, analytics, or automation use cases.
• Mentor junior engineers and promote data engineering best practices across the team.

Technical Skills

• Strong handson experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services, including:
  • BigQuery
  • Dataplex
  • Cloud Storage
  • Cloud Composer (Airflow)
• Proficiency in Spark and PySpark for largescale data processing.
• Advanced SQL skills for analytics and data transformation.
• Solid experience with Unix/Linux and shell scripting.
• Experience with Ab Initio (preferred) or equivalent ETL orchestration tools.
• Strong understanding of data warehousing, data modeling, and distributed systems.

Soft Skills

• Strong analytical and problemsolving abilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Certifications (Preferred)
• Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer or equivalent GCP certification.
• GenAI & Modern Data (Preferred)

Handson experience with GenAI/LLM use cases such as:

• Data intelligence and automation
• Prompt engineering
• Vector databases and embeddings
• GenAI integration with data pipelines

Collaboration & Communication: Act as a trusted partner to business, analytics, and data science teams by clearly communicating tradeoffs, progress, and risks.

Continuous Improvement: Stay current with emerging data technologies and practices, and drive adoption where they create measurable value.
