The Enterprise Technology Services organization partners with every part of the American Express business to power the company's growth and innovation with trust and efficiency, and drive competitive differentiation with speed. We support the delivery and operations of technology, digital, and data capabilities, platforms, and services globally. Specifically, our team is responsible for the company's technology engineering, architecture, and infrastructure, providing 24x7 support to ensure an uninterrupted, high-quality experience for customers and colleagues. We also provide product management for core enterprise platforms, and lead technology risk and information security, enterprise data governance and platforms, digital product and design, and enterprise AI platforms on behalf of the company.
Sr Software Engineer I directs the end-to-end development of software applications, ensures adherence to best practices, mentors and coaches junior engineers, and collaborates with teams to optimize performance and integration.
Responsibilities
- Mentors junior Software Engineers and cross-functional team of colleagues, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation
- Provides guidance and support to junior engineers, fostering professional growth and development within the team
- Directs the design, development, testing, and deployment of software applications and systems
- Oversees a variety of tasks, platforms, and technologies to expand new and existing software to meet changing requirements
- Writes automated unit tests to ensure correctness and stability
- Provides technical guidance to ensure adherence to best practices and coding standards
- Monitors software performance and implements improvements to optimize functionality
- Analyzes technical challenges and provides innovative solutions to enhance software quality and efficiency
- Collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of software solutions
- Collaborates and co-creates effectively with teams in product and the business to align technology initiatives with business objectives
Qualifications
Education Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and/or comparable experience; advanced degree preferred
Work Experience
- Knowledge of distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, NoSQL, and relational databases
- 7+ years experience building full-stack enterprise applications using Java, React, REST APIs and NoSQL databases. Deep experience with reactive systems and GraphQL a positive
- Knowledge of the core tools used in the planning, analyzing, crafting, building, testing, configuring, and maintaining of assigned application(s)
- Experience in application design, software development, and automated testing
- Experience in object-oriented design and coding with variety of languages
- Experience in distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, and relational databases
- Experience in Agile software development methodologies and practices such as Scrum/Kanban, iterations, user stories
- Experience in automation testing and documentation (i.e. automated, functional, and performance)
- Proficient in using AI tools including GitHub Copilot and Agentic tools like Devin, Claude Code throughout SDLC to improve productivity and quality. Experience building enterprise grade GenAI applications and building end-to-end agentic SDLC workflow a plus.
