About the role:

The Cloud Centre of Excellence is responsible for developing Gartner's capabilities in automating and streamlining IT infrastructure processes and DevOps tasks while improving Gartner's self service capabilities using public cloud platforms and open-source technologies. We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer (FinOps) primarily focuses on cloud cost optimization and governance across multi cloud platforms (AWS, Azure and GCP) while maintaining high performance and reliability. This role involves technical, architectural, and financial expertise to drive engineering efficiency and maximize ROI. In this role, you'll partner with technology, operations, and finance teams to build automation, reporting and self-service capabilities that drive cost transparency, accountability, and performance in our multi-cloud environments.

What you will do:

  • Analyse cost and usage across different cloud platforms, implement FinOps practices for cost allocation, optimization, and governance.
  • Identify, report and fix inefficient architectural patterns to optimize compute, storage (lifecycle, snapshots), and networking (data transfer) costs etc.
  • Leverage cloud cost management platforms and develop automation to streamline financial operations, cost efficient patterns, guardrails and ROI tracking.
  • Work with technology FinOps partners to implement processes to monitor cloud spend in real-time, identifying anomalies, inefficiencies, and opportunities for cost control.
  • Implement rightsizing, auto-scaling, and tagging strategies.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to build roadmaps for efficiency and educate developers on cost-impactful decisions.
  • Ensure that optimizations do not compromise system performance, scalability, or availability.
  • Develop robust self-service capabilities, empowering users to access and implement optimization recommendations seamlessly.
  • Build and maintain infrastructure-as-code modules (Terraform, CloudFormation) with cost-optimization best practices baked in.
  • Create dashboards and reports that provide visibility into cloud costs and ROI metrics. Present actionable insights to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Support Technology teams with ad-hoc analysis needs.
  • Act as the FinOps liaison to Engineering and Operations teams-translate financial goals into actionable engineering tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies and standards.

What you will need:

Must have

  • Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent degree in Computer Science or a related field required.
  • 4-6 years of software engineering experience with at least 2 years focused on cloud infrastructure and cloud cost optimization/FinOps.
  • Proven experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, and GCP) and their cost categories.
  • Hands-on expertise in cloud cost management tools like AWS Cost explorer/Harness CCM/Apptio Cloudability or any other similar tools.
  • Solid understanding of cloud networking, compute, storage, and containerization (Kubernetes).
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python or related languages.

Good to have

  • Strong knowledge of FinOps principles and cloud billing models.
  • AWS/Azure/GCP certification.
  • FinOps Certified Practitioner or Professional.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (Power BI or similar tools).
