Role Summary
This position is responsible for the planning, design, and development of API authorization services in AWS, serving as a senior subject matter expert (SME) for the centralized authorizer. The role provides architectural leadership, establishes best practices, and mentors less experienced engineers across application security architecture, development, and operations.
The ideal candidate has strong hands-on development experience, deep knowledge of cloud-native and API security patterns, and the ability to lead enterprise-scale authorization solutions in a DevSecOps environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain cloud-native authorization services in AWS with a strong emphasis on clean, efficient, secure, and well-documented code across the full technology stack.
- Produce enterprise-level authorization and authentication architectures for APIs, collaborating closely with application, infrastructure, and operations teams to deliver scalable and secure solutions.
- Serve as a senior SME for API and application security, identifying and promoting best practices across teams.
- Lead steady-state operations and continuous improvement initiatives for globally distributed authorization services, including enhancements to a custom-built API Authorizer utility.
- Coordinate across infrastructure, application, identity, and threat monitoring teams to ensure timely and successful delivery of solutions.
- Develop, maintain, and enforce standards, security procedures, and access controls to ensure the integrity and security of API-related systems.
- Create and maintain comprehensive system documentation, including installation, configuration, operational procedures, and troubleshooting guides for authentication and authorization technologies.
- Support and lead integration, authentication, and authorization initiatives, including new implementations and modernization efforts.
- Own and lead solution implementations, upgrades, enhancements, and conversions; evaluate options and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Participate in and conduct code reviews to maintain code quality, adherence to coding standards, and knowledge sharing within the team.
- Collaborate with teams in EST timezone for one week each month, ensuring smooth coordination and support across geographies.
What You Need To Succeed (Minimum Qualifications)
- Minimum 4-7 years of IT experience with hands-on software development experience in DevSecOps or build-to-manage environments.
- Strong understanding of APIs and microservices architectures related design patterns, including design, deployment, and lifecycle management.
- Good understanding of the frontend application development with technologies Angular or ReactJS frameworks
- Experience with identity federation and authorization protocols, including OAuth and OpenID Connect (OIDC).
- AWS cloud experience, including : Infrastructure as Code (Chef, Puppet, Ansible, or similar), CI/CD tools (GitLab CI, Tekton, AWS Code Pipeline, etc.), AWS CDK, Serverless Application Model (SAM), and CloudFormation
- Experience with advanced authorization technologies and patterns, such as: Policy Decision Points (PDP), XACML, Open Policy Agent (OPA).
- Application development experience using TypeScript (Preferred), Java or Python.
- Experience with automated testing frameworks and secure coding standards.
- Strong knowledge of DevOps and build-to-manage operating models.
- Proficiency with source control and build tools, including Git-based platforms (GitLab, GitHub, or similar).
- Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
- Demonstrated experience with 12-factor application methodology, including the ability to coach others on appropriate patterns.
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native application development.
- Demonstrated ability to formulate security strategies, evaluate alternatives, and make informed recommendations.
- Strong communication skills with technical peers, business analysts, and subject matter experts.
- Familiarity with core Identity and Access Management (IAM) concepts for authentication and authorization.
