Role Summary
We are seeking a Senior SAP Business One (SAP B1) Infrastructure Engineer to own the architecture, design, deployment, and ongoing operation of the infrastructure that runs our SAP Business One ERP landscape. This is a senior, hands-on engineering role responsible for the full infrastructure lifecycle — from sizing and architecting compute, storage, and network resources, through installing and configuring SAP B1 across hybrid (on-premise and cloud) environments, to managing performance, availability, security, and disaster recovery in production.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise across both SAP B1 database platforms — SAP HANA and Microsoft SQL Server — and can translate business and capacity requirements into resilient, well-documented, and cost-effective infrastructure. They will serve as the technical authority for SAP B1 infrastructure decisions and mentor junior administrators and engineers.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Architecture & Design
- Architect and size compute, storage, memory, and network resources for SAP B1 landscapes (development, QA, staging, and production) on both HANA and SQL Server, using SAP sizing guidelines and the Quick Sizer where applicable.
- Design hybrid infrastructure spanning on-premise data centers and public cloud (Azure, AWS, or GCP), including landscape topology, high-availability clustering, network segmentation, and secure connectivity (VPN, ExpressRoute/Direct Connect).
- Define reference architectures, capacity plans, and infrastructure standards for SAP B1, balancing performance, resilience, security, and cost.
- Produce architecture diagrams, sizing documents, and infrastructure runbooks; lead technical design reviews.
Installation, Configuration & Deployment
- Install, configure, and upgrade SAP Business One (including SAP HANA database, SAP B1 Server Tools, System Landscape Directory, License Server, App Framework, Service Layer, Mobile/Web services) on Linux (SUSE/RHEL) and Windows Server.
- Install and manage SAP B1 on Microsoft SQL Server, including instance configuration, database setup, and version/patch management.
- Build and provision environments using infrastructure-as-code and automation tooling (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell, shell scripting) to ensure repeatable, consistent deployments.
- Plan and execute migrations and upgrades, including on-premise to cloud migrations and SQL-to-HANA transitions where required.
Operations, Performance & Reliability
- Administer and manage production SAP B1 systems: monitoring, patching, performance tuning, backup, and capacity management.
- Tune database and OS-level performance (HANA memory management, SQL Server indexing/query performance, storage I/O) to meet SLAs.
- Implement and test backup, restore, high-availability, and disaster-recovery strategies; own RTO/RPO targets and DR runbooks.
- Establish proactive monitoring, alerting, and observability (e.g., SAP B1 logs, OS/DB metrics, cloud-native monitoring).
Security, Governance & Collaboration
- Implement infrastructure security: hardening, patch management, access controls, encryption, and certificate management, in line with compliance requirements.
- Partner with SAP B1 functional consultants, developers, DBAs, and business stakeholders to align infrastructure with application and integration needs.
- Manage relationships with SAP, hosting providers, and hardware/cloud vendors; handle escalations and SAP support cases (SAP Notes, incidents).
- Mentor junior engineers and administrators; document standards, procedures, and knowledge-base articles.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: 10+ years in IT infrastructure engineering, with at least 4+ years dedicated to SAP Business One infrastructure (architecture, installation, and administration).
- SAP B1 expertise: Proven hands-on experience installing, configuring, upgrading, and supporting SAP Business One in production environments.
- Databases: Strong, demonstrable expertise in BOTH SAP HANA and Microsoft SQL Server — installation, administration, tuning, backup/recovery, and troubleshooting.
- Operating systems: Solid Linux administration (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and/or Red Hat) and Windows Server administration.
- Cloud & hybrid: Experience architecting and operating workloads on at least one major cloud (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and integrating with on-premise infrastructure.
- Networking & security: Working knowledge of networking (DNS, firewalls, load balancers, VPN), storage, virtualization, and infrastructure security best practices.
- Automation: Proficiency with scripting and automation (PowerShell, Bash) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent).
- HA/DR: Demonstrated experience designing and testing high-availability and disaster-recovery solutions.
- Soft skills: Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills; able to lead technical discussions and mentor others.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- SAP Business One certification(s) and/or SAP HANA technical certification.
- Relevant cloud certifications (e.g., Azure Administrator/Solutions Architect, AWS SysOps/Solutions Architect).
- Experience with SAP B1 integration tooling (Integration Framework / B1if, Service Layer, third-party connectors) and SAP B1 add-ons.
- Experience with virtualization (VMware/Hyper-V) and containerization concepts.
- Experience operating multi-tenant, multi-company, or partner-hosted SAP B1 environments.
- Familiarity with ITIL/change-management processes and compliance frameworks (e.g., SOC 2, ISO 27001).
What Success Looks Like
- SAP B1 environments are reliably available, performant, secure, and recoverable, consistently meeting agreed SLAs and RTO/RPO targets.
- Infrastructure is well-architected, documented, automated, and cost-optimized across hybrid environments.
- Deployments, upgrades, and migrations are executed predictably with minimal business disruption.
