Job Description

As a Senior Principal Engineer - Systems at Medtronic, you are a recognized master in your technical discipline, playing a critical role in advancing existing technologies and introducing new therapies. You will work independently to implement strategic goals, establish operational plans, and drive the design of new products and processes. This individual contributor role involves leading complex initiatives, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring compliance within a highly regulated medical device environment, significantly impacting functional results and overall business strategy.

A Day in the Life

You will lead with purpose, contributing to innovative healthcare solutions by:

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to translate requirements into platform solutions and evaluate emerging technologies.
  • Designing, developing, testing, and documenting software components, and resolving infrastructure/application issues.
  • Leading CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions), field investigations, and capacity planning for platform growth.
  • Maintaining technical documentation and driving continuous improvement with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Interfacing with cross-functional teams (software, mechanical, hardware, reliability, quality, regulatory), ensuring compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Reporting to the Engineering Director and collaborating with global teams, vendors, and stakeholders.
  • Assessing design changes, applying Model-Based Systems Engineering, and ensuring safety and risk management compliance.
  • Mentoring junior engineers, tracking deliverables, and supporting occasional travel.
  • Formulating, delivering, and managing assigned projects of strategic importance, often self-initiated.
  • Developing solutions to unique and complex issues, improving existing processes and systems.
  • Interacting with internal and external customers and vendors, including executive leadership, on significant technical matters.
  • Negotiating with others to reach understanding or agreement.
  • Providing guidance, coaching, and training to other employees.

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • B-Tech/BE in Computer Science/Electronics or equivalent with 17+ years of relevant experience, OR ME/M-Tech in Computer Science/Electronics or equivalent with 15+ years of relevant experience.
  • Mastery-level knowledge of a specialty area and working knowledge of several other areas.
  • Prior experience in the Medical Device Industry or related regulated environments, including FDA Class I, II, and III Medical Device systems.
  • Expertise in Embedded C/C++ within RTOS development environments.
  • Hands-on experience in Embedded/Firmware Device Drivers.
  • Proficient in hardware/software interfacing and design.
  • Strong understanding of complex embedded systems and software, networking protocols, software development, and system design.
  • Proficiency in Agile software development processes, with experience in change control, requirements management, and source code control.
  • Ability to conduct Code Reviews, Static and Dynamic Code Analysis, and generate software metrics for Unit and Integration Testing.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in flexible settings, different time zones, and diverse team environments, contributing directly to team success.
  • Leadership and mentoring skills; capable of managing diverse relationships and interacting with higher management.
  • Demonstrated experience in full product life cycle development and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with designing for Hardware/Firmware and wireless interfaces of electronic devices with user-centric design practices.
  • Knowledge of OOAD and familiarity with UML.
  • Experience designing systems in a regulated environment (e.g., ISO, IEC 60601-1, -2, -6, IEC 62304, ISO-14971, FDA 21CFR820.30).
  • Proven experience delivering software using .Net, C, Java, Python, Golang, or similar languages.
  • Understanding of cloud-native architecture (AWS/Azure experience).
