Senior Platform Engineer (API Gateway)

Position Summary: We are looking for a Senior Platform Engineer - API Gateway to join the athenahealth platform engineering team in Bangalore. This role is ideal for an experienced software engineer with strong expertise in public and private cloud environments, distributed systems, and API platform technologies. The selected candidate will contribute to designing, building, and scaling high-quality platform services that support secure, reliable, and scalable API management capabilities across the organization. The role requires hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, modern programming languages, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, and API gateway technologies.

About the Team: The Managed API Gateway team at athenahealth is responsible for handling traffic routing, load balancing, authentication, and authorization for API requests across microservices. The platform provides a unified entry point for both internal and external APIs, enabling secure, scalable, and reliable communication across distributed systems. The team focuses on improving platform scalability, operational reliability, developer productivity, and cloud-native engineering practices while supporting athenahealth's growing platform ecosystem.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and deploy scalable platform services and API gateway capabilities in cloud-native environments

• Produce clear and accurate technical design specifications and architectural documentation

• Build and maintain high-quality software components and services aligned with security, performance, and reliability standards

• Develop, debug, test, and deploy production-ready code while ensuring adherence to coding best practices

• Scale systems to support increasing business demand and availability requirements, including HA/DR targets

• Participate actively in agile sprint planning, story estimation, backlog refinement, and technical discussions

• Perform peer code reviews, troubleshooting, and technical debt identification to improve overall platform quality

Additional Job Responsibilities:

• Monitor and optimize API gateway, cloud infrastructure, and platform service performance

• Support Infrastructure as Code (IaC) implementation and automation initiatives using Terraform and related tools

• Collaborate with DevOps, Platform, Security, and Engineering teams to improve deployment and operational processes

• Analyze code, application logs, and system behavior for advanced troubleshooting and issue resolution

• Ensure Definition of Done (DoD) standards are met, including testing, documentation, bug fixes, and code quality requirements

• Contribute to continuous improvements in CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and cloud operations

• Support secure authentication and authorization integrations using IAM solutions such as Okta, Ping, or similar tools

Expected Education & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field

• 5-9 years of experience in software engineering or platform engineering roles

• Strong programming expertise in languages such as Go, Python, Node.js, Java, or JavaScript

• Experience with cloud platforms and services including Amazon Web Services (ECS, EC2, ELB, IAM, RDS, Route53, Lambda, CloudWatch, VPC, S3)

• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, RESTful APIs, API Gateway technologies, and Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform

• Knowledge of Linux, SQL, Redis, CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, and monitoring stacks

• Exposure to Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions such as Okta, Ping Identity, or related technologies preferred
