Role Description

This is a full-time role for a Patent Drafting professional based in Bengaluru. The Patent Drafter will be responsible for conducting in-depth research, analyzing technical documents, drafting patent applications, and coordinating with inventors and legal teams. They will work closely with clients to understand their inventions and draft high-quality patent specifications. This role requires strong attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently and on-site in Bengaluru.

Major roles and responsibilities in:

  • Draft high-quality patent specifications, claims, abstracts, and drawings based on inventor disclosures across diverse technology domains.
  • Conduct inventor interviews to understand inventions, identify patentable aspects, and formulate effective claim strategies.
  • Prosecute patent applications before the Indian Patent Office, including preparing and filing responses to First Examination Reports (FERs), hearing submissions, amendments, and other statutory responses.
  • Represent clients before the Indian Patent Office during hearings and assist in resolving prosecution-related issues.
  • Manage end-to-end patent filing and prosecution for Indian, Convention, PCT, and National Phase applications.
  • Advise clients on patentability, filing strategies, claim scope, prosecution strategy, and portfolio development.
  • Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate (FTO), validity/invalidity, landscape, and state-of-the-art searches, and provide strategic recommendations.
  • Prepare legal and technical opinions on patentability, infringement, validity, and enforcement risks.
  • Coordinate with foreign associates, international law firms, and clients regarding global patent filings, prosecution, and portfolio management.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory deadlines, docket management, and procedural requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Develop and implement IP protection strategies aligned with clients business and R&D objectives.
  • Manage and oversee patent portfolios, including continuation, divisional, convention, PCT, and National Phase filing strategies.
  • Review patent drafts, office action responses, and prosecution documents prepared by junior patent professionals to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Mentor, train, and supervise Patent Analysts, Patent Engineers, and Junior Patent Agents.
  • Stay updated on changes in patent laws, rules, examination guidelines, and judicial precedents in India and major international jurisdictions.
  • Conduct patent due diligence, portfolio audits, licensing support, and IP assessments for technology transactions, investments, and acquisitions.
  • Provide strategic advice on invention harvesting, patent commercialization, licensing opportunities, and IP risk mitigation.
  • Interact with inventors, research teams, corporate legal departments, universities, and startups to develop and execute patent strategies.
  • Prepare client presentations, patent portfolio reviews, and IP strategy reports.
  • Support business development initiatives by participating in client meetings, preparing technical proposals, and identifying opportunities for expanding IP services.
  • Contribute to the development of internal best practices, quality standards, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Registered Patent Agent under the Indian Patents Act.
  • Strong knowledge of the Indian Patents Act, Patent Rules, and international patent systems including the PCT, USPTO, EPO, and WIPO procedures.
  • Demonstrated expertise in patent drafting, prosecution, claim drafting, and hearing practice.
  • Strong analytical, legal, and technical writing skills.
  • Excellent communication and client relationship management abilities.
  • Proven leadership, mentoring, and project management capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple client portfolios while ensuring high quality and timely delivery.
