About the role

The Senior Linux Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, security, and optimization of enterprise Linux infrastructure supporting business-critical applications and services. This role provides advanced technical expertise in Linux systems engineering, infrastructure operations, automation, performance tuning, and incident resolution to ensure the availability, reliability, scalability, and security of production environments.

The Senior Linux Engineer serves as a technical escalation point for complex infrastructure issues, leads root-cause analysis and remediation efforts, and drives continuous improvement through automation, standardization, and operational best practices. This position works closely with infrastructure, security, network, application, and operations teams to maintain resilient platforms and support strategic technology initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Linux Systems Engineering and Administration

  • Design, build, configure, deploy, and maintain enterprise Linux servers and infrastructure across development, testing, staging, and production environments.
  • Administer and support Linux distributions, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), CentOS Stream, Ubuntu Server, and other enterprise Linux platforms as required.
  • Manage system services, processes, filesystems, storage, user and group permissions, package repositories, system initialization, and kernel-level configurations.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting of operating system, hardware, storage, networking, and application-related issues.
  • Manage system lifecycle activities, including provisioning, upgrades, migrations, decommissioning, and platform standardization.
  • Optimize system performance, resource utilization, availability, and capacity to meet business and application requirements.

Infrastructure Operations and Reliability

  • Monitor system health, availability, resource utilization, and operational performance using enterprise monitoring and logging tools.
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of complex incidents, recurring failures, and service degradation.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions to reduce recurring incidents and improve platform stability.
  • Support high-availability architectures, system redundancy, backup and recovery, business continuity, and disaster recovery initiatives.
  • Participate in change management, maintenance planning, production deployments, and infrastructure upgrades while minimizing service disruption.
  • Develop and maintain operational procedures, troubleshooting guides, runbooks, and technical documentation.

Security, Compliance, and Vulnerability Management

  • Implement and maintain Linux security standards, configuration baselines, access controls, and system hardening practices.
  • Coordinate operating system patching, security updates, vulnerability remediation, and compliance-related activities.
  • Apply security best practices for SSH, sudo, authentication, file permissions, service configurations, and privileged access.
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity and compliance teams to investigate findings, remediate risks, and maintain audit readiness.
  • Review system configurations and identify opportunities to improve security posture and reduce operational risk.

Automation and Configuration Management

  • Develop and maintain automation using Bash, Python, and other scripting technologies to improve operational efficiency and consistency.
  • Implement configuration management and infrastructure automation using tools such as Ansible or comparable platforms.
  • Automate routine administration, system provisioning, patching, health checks, reporting, and operational maintenance tasks.
  • Establish repeatable deployment procedures and standardized configurations across Linux environments.
  • Identify opportunities to eliminate manual processes, reduce human error, and improve service delivery through automation.

Technical Leadership and Collaboration

  • Serve as a senior technical resource and escalation point for Linux infrastructure issues.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge transfer to Linux administrators, engineers, and operations personnel.
  • Collaborate with application, database, network, security, cloud, and infrastructure teams to resolve cross-platform issues.
  • Contribute to infrastructure architecture reviews, technical design decisions, capacity planning, and platform modernization initiatives.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements to infrastructure reliability, security, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and communicate technical risks, incident findings, and remediation plans to relevant stakeholders.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • 5 + years professional experience in Linux systems administration, systems engineering, or enterprise infrastructure operations.
  • Strong hands-on experience supporting enterprise Linux environments, preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux operating system architecture, system services, process management, filesystems, storage, permissions, and system performance.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across operating system, networking, DNS, SSH, storage, resource utilization, and service availability issues.
  • Experience with Linux patch management, vulnerability remediation, system hardening, access management, and security best practices.
  • Proficiency in Bash scripting and working knowledge of Python or another scripting language.
  • Experience with system monitoring, log analysis, incident management, root-cause analysis, and problem resolution.
  • Practical understanding of backup and recovery, high availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity.
  • Experience planning and executing production changes, system upgrades, migrations, and infrastructure maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize competing operational demands, and lead complex technical investigations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on documentation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Red Hat Satellite, Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, or comparable enterprise management and automation solutions.
  • Familiarity with virtualization platforms, containers, Kubernetes, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience with enterprise monitoring, centralized logging, configuration compliance, and vulnerability management platforms.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code practices, Git-based workflows, and automated deployment pipelines.
  • Experience supporting large-scale, distributed, or highly available production environments.
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes, formal change management, incident response, and problem management.
  • Relevant Linux, Red Hat, cloud, or infrastructure certifications.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring technical staff and leading infrastructure engineering initiatives.

Success Criteria

  • High availability, reliability, and performance of enterprise Linux platforms.
  • Timely completion of security patching, vulnerability remediation, and compliance activities.
  • Reduced recurring incidents through effective root-cause analysis and permanent corrective actions.
