Senior Java Developer

Role Overview

We are looking for a seasoned Senior/Staff Java Developer to join the Store Payments team supporting critical checkout and payment systems. This team owns highly transactional, Tier 0 systems responsible for payment processing, including authorization reversals that occur both at checkout and post-register.

This person will be expected to independently own clearly defined deliverables from requirements through production. The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who can translate business and technical requirements into robust, highly available solutions while taking ownership across the full software development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and support highly transactional, business-critical payment applications using Java and Spring Boot
• Take individual ownership of clearly defined technical deliverables from requirements through production deployment
• Translate requirements and acceptance criteria into scalable, reliable, production-ready code
• Build and maintain solutions supporting Tier 0 checkout and payment systems
• Develop highly available architectures within a cloud environment
• Work with both SQL and NoSQL databases
• Develop event-driven and asynchronous solutions leveraging technologies such as Kafka and other messaging/queue platforms
• Participate across the full SDLC, including requirements, design, development, testing, deployment, and production support
• Troubleshoot production issues and provide hands-on support for critical business and transactional systems
• Partner closely with engineers, product teams, and business stakeholders supporting checkout and payments
• Ensure applications are built with reliability, scalability, resiliency, and production readiness in mind
• Own code through deployment rather than handing work off after development

Required Skills

• Strong hands-on development experience with Java
• Strong experience with Spring Boot
• Experience developing and supporting highly available, high-volume transactional applications
• Strong understanding of REST APIs and microservices architecture
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases
• Experience developing applications in a cloud environment
• Experience with Kafka or similar messaging/queue technologies
• Strong understanding of distributed and event-driven systems
• Experience taking applications and code from development through production
• Strong knowledge of the full software development lifecycle
• Ability to independently take requirements and acceptance criteria and turn them into working, robust solutions
• Experience supporting production applications and resolving issues in business-critical environments

Preferred Experience

• Experience working with Tier 0 or similarly business-critical systems
• Experience within payments, point-of-sale, checkout, retail, or financial transaction processing
• Experience designing for high availability, resiliency, and fault tolerance
• Experience operating in environments where system uptime and transaction reliability are critical

Ideal Candidate

This is not a role for someone who is only focused on writing code against assigned tickets. We are looking for a seasoned engineer who can own a piece of functionality end to end, understand the business requirement behind it, make sound technical decisions, build the solution, take it into production, and support it once it is live.

The strongest candidates will have worked on high-volume, highly available transactional systems where reliability and production support are just as important as development.
