We're looking for a Senior Java Backend Engineer to join one of our dynamic client teams. Our client is a Singapore-based, MAS-licensed private credit investment platform that connects accredited investors with private credit opportunities across Singapore and Abu Dhabi.
As a Senior Java Backend Engineer, you will lead the modernization of a mission-critical enterprise platform by migrating its technology stack from Spring Boot 2.x to Spring Boot 4.x and Java 11 to Java 21. You'll collaborate with an international engineering team to modernize a production system consisting of 32 backend modules, approximately 272 REST APIs, and more than 18 third-party integrations, while leveraging AI-assisted development tools to deliver scalable, secure, and high-quality solutions for a highly regulated financial platform.
Responsibilities
- Lead the migration of a large-scale enterprise platform from Spring Boot 2.x to Spring Boot 4.x and Java 11 to Java 21 LTS.
- Modernize and maintain a 32-module Gradle-based backend platform supporting approximately 272 REST APIs and 18+ third-party integrations.
- Perform framework migrations, including javax-to-jakarta migration and Spring Security modernization using SecurityFilterChain.
- Upgrade and validate critical frameworks and dependencies, including Spring Boot, Spring Security, Spring Cloud, JOOQ, Flyway, Jackson, PostgreSQL JDBC, SpringDoc OpenAPI, Apache POI, and related technologies.
- Design, develop, and enhance automated integration, regression, and unit tests using Groovy/Spock and related testing frameworks.
- Build and maintain robust CI/CD pipelines, SonarQube quality gates, and code coverage standards.
- Analyze and troubleshoot complex backend issues while ensuring business-critical workflows remain stable and compliant throughout the modernization effort.
- Utilize AI-powered development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar platforms to accelerate code migration, refactoring, dependency upgrades, and repetitive engineering tasks.
- Review, validate, and refine AI-generated code while maintaining engineering excellence, software quality, and platform reliability.
- Collaborate with architects, product owners, and international engineering teams to evaluate modernization strategies, recommend technical solutions, and support cloud-native deployments within Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Produce technical documentation, Architecture Decision Records (ADR), implementation plans, and knowledge-transfer materials.
- Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, technical discussions, and knowledge-sharing sessions to ensure successful project delivery.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 5 years of professional experience in Java backend development.
- Strong expertise in Java, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, and RESTful API development.
- Proven experience upgrading or migrating enterprise applications between major Spring Boot versions (2.x to 3.x/4.x).
- Strong understanding of Spring Security, authentication, and authorization mechanisms.
- Hands-on experience with Gradle multi-module projects.
- Experience working with JOOQ, Flyway, PostgreSQL, Jackson, Spring Cloud, and OpenAPI/Swagger.
- Experience developing automated tests using Groovy/Spock, JUnit, or similar testing frameworks.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and code quality tools such as SonarQube.
- Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Secret Manager, or similar cloud services.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar AI coding assistants.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within an international, remote-first engineering team.
- Willing to work on a project-based contract with an expected engagement of 3–6 months, with the possibility of extension up to 1 year, depending on project requirements and performance.
- Nice to have:
- Experience with Vaadin 8 and/or Vaadin 24.
- Experience performing Java 21 and enterprise framework modernization projects.
- Experience modernizing legacy enterprise applications.
- Experience within fintech, banking, lending, wealth management, or other regulated industries.
- Experience working with cloud-native architectures and large-scale backend platforms.
