Overview:
Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is seeking an experienced and dynamic Engineering Manager to lead and grow a high-performing, globally distributed team of engineers. This role involves shaping the future of Ubuntu by applying strong technical leadership, engaging with cross-functional teams, and driving world-class engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership:
- Lead, mentor, and scale a distributed team of software engineers, fostering an inclusive and high-performing engineering culture.
- Technical Strategy & Execution:
- Define, estimate, and drive execution of projects in collaboration with product and engineering leadership, ensuring alignment with Canonical's strategic goals.
- Engineering Excellence:
- Promote best-in-class engineering practices and lead by example with hands-on technical contributions.
- Cross-functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with product managers and other engineering teams to define roadmaps, align on architecture, and ensure successful delivery.
- Community Engagement:
- Represent Canonical within the open-source community and encourage team participation in community projects and forums.
- Remote-first Leadership:
- Operate effectively in a remote-first environment, with occasional travel for company-wide or team-specific sprints (typically twice a year).
What We're Looking For in You:
- Proven experience leading or managing a team of software engineers in a distributed setup.
- Deep expertise with Linux distributions and packaging systems (e.g., deb, rpm).
- Strong technical background in one or more of the following areas:
- Linux system architecture
- Boot process
- Programming languages/toolchains: Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go
- Hardware platforms: ARM, RISC-V
- Familiarity with open-source processes and community engagement.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- A passion for building resilient, scalable systems and nurturing top engineering talent.
