Senior Engineer – Substation Design
Role Overview
We're seeking a Senior Engineer to lead transmission substation design for Sunstripe's power and energy storage projects. This role is a key technical contributor delivering high-quality substation engineering in support of BESS, solar PV, and grid interconnection projects across the US market. The ideal candidate combines deep transmission substation design expertise with an understanding of how substations interface with utility interconnection requirements and energy storage systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead transmission substation design across all project phases — from conceptual layout and single-line diagrams through detailed design and construction drawings
- Develop substation design packages including equipment specifications, protection and control schemes, grounding, insulation coordination, and relay settings
- Design HV/MV switchgear, transformers, disconnect switches, surge arresters, and associated substation equipment
- Support BESS and solar PV interconnection — designing the substation interface between generation/storage assets and the transmission grid
- Conduct substation protection and control engineering, including relay coordination and SCADA integration
- Coordinate with utility and ISO/RTO interconnection teams on substation design requirements and approval processes
- Prepare technical reports, design drawings, and specifications for client and internal stakeholders
- Ensure designs comply with US standards (IEEE, NESC, NERC, NEC, and applicable utility standards)
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical / Power Systems Engineering or related field
- Solid experience in transmission substation design, including detailed design and construction drawing packages
- Hands-on experience with HV/MV substation equipment — transformers, switchgear, protection and control systems
- Experience with BESS or renewable energy substation interconnection strongly preferred
- Familiarity with US utility interconnection processes and substation design approval requirements
- US market experience is required — knowledge of IEEE, NESC, NERC, and applicable utility standards
- Proficiency with relevant tools (e.g., AutoCAD, ETAP, PSS®E, or similar)
- Strong analytical, written, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage own deliverables within project timelines
