Job Summary We are seeking a skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer with strong expertise in 3D modeling using SolidWorks to join our team. The ideal candidate will specialize in designing sheet metal components and weldment structures, with direct experience in truck body applications (such as custom truck bodies, service bodies, flatbeds, or related heavy vehicle fabrications). This role involves creating detailed 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and manufacturing documentation while utilizing SolidWorks PDM for data management and JDE ERP systems for integration with manufacturing and BOM processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain complex 3D models, assemblies, and detailed fabrication drawings using SolidWorks, with a primary focus on sheet metal design (e.g., flanges, bends, flat patterns, forming) and weldment design (e.g., structural frames, profiles, cut lists).
- Design and optimize components and assemblies for truck bodies, including custom aluminum frame design, cabinets & toolbox designs, mounting systems, brackets, enclosures, and structural elements, ensuring compliance with industry standards, manufacturability, and customer specifications.
- Generate accurate flat patterns, weldment cut lists, BOMs (Bill of Materials), and production-ready drawings.
- Manage design data and revisions using SolidWorks PDM, including check-in/check-out processes, workflow approvals, and version control.
- Interface with JDE ERP system to update BOMs, part numbers, and manufacturing data, ensuring seamless transition from design to production.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, production, and quality teams to resolve design issues, incorporate feedback, and support prototyping or fabrication.
- Familiar with FMVSS standards.
- Perform design reviews, tolerance analysis, and ensure designs meet structural, weight, and cost targets.
- Stay current with SolidWorks best practices for sheet metal and weldments tools/features.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
- Experience: Minimum 8 to 12 years of professional experience as a CAD Designer/Engineer, with proven hands-on expertise in SolidWorks for sheet metal and weldment design.
- Required Technical Skills:
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks 3D modeling, including Sheet Metal tools (Base Flange, Edge Flange, Flat Pattern, etc.) and Weldments (Structural Members, Trim/Extend, Cut Lists, etc.).
- Direct experience designing truck bodies, vehicle frames, or similar heavy-duty fabricated structures.
- SolidWorks PDM experience for data management, collaboration, and revision control.
- Preferred Skills: GD&T application, finite element analysis basics, familiarity with fabrication processes (welding, cutting, bending), and knowledge of automotive/truck industry standards.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience working with AC & DC electrical equipment will be a plus.
- Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
