Job Overview

Responsible for planning, executing, and managing the commissioning of Ultra Pure Water (UPW) systems to ensure systems are designed, installed, tested, and operated in compliance with project specifications, process requirements, and industry standards.

Responsibilities

Commissioning Planning & Preparation

  • Review design documents including P&IDs, Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), specifications, and control philosophy.
  • Develop commissioning procedures, checklists, and method statements.
  • Participate in HAZOP, risk assessments, and constructability reviews.
  • Coordinate with engineering, construction, vendors, and client teams.

Pre-Commissioning Activities

  • Verify mechanical completion of systems (MC checks, punch list closure).
  • Perform line checks, flushing, cleaning, and passivation activities.
  • Ensure proper installation and alignment of equipment such as: Pretreatment Units, RO Units (Multi-pass systems), EDI (Electrodeionization), Ion Exchange Units, Degasifiers / Membrane contactors, UV Units (TOC reduction & sterilization), Filters (UF, cartridge filters), Chemical dosing systems.

Commissioning Execution

  • Perform functional testing and loop checking (instruments, control valves, analyzers).
  • Commission PLC/SCADA/DCS systems in coordination with automation team.
  • Start-up and stabilize UPW system to achieve required quality parameters: Resistivity (≥18.2 MΩ·cm), TOC levels, Silica removal, Dissolved oxygen
  • Troubleshoot system performance issues.

Performance Testing & Validation

  • Conduct performance test runs and demonstrate system capacity and efficiency.
  • Support validation activities (IQ, OQ, PQ – especially in pharma projects).
  • Ensure compliance with standards: SEMI standards (for semiconductor), ASTM / USP / cGMP (for pharma applications)

Documentation & Handover

  • Prepare commissioning dossiers and reports.
  • Update as-built documentation.
  • Ensure completion of: Test records, Calibration reports, SOPs and O&M Manuals
  • Support final handover to operations team.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

  • Enforce safety procedures and permit-to-work systems.
  • Identify and mitigate risks during commissioning activities.
  • Ensure compliance with site HSE policies.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of UPW process technologies: Reverse Osmosis (RO – multi-pass), EDI systems, UF systems, Degassing systems, Chemical dosing (SMBS, NaOH, acid systems)
  • Experience with instrumentation: Conductivity/resistivity analyzers, TOC analyzers, Flow, pressure, and level transmitters, Familiarity with automation systems (PLC/DCS/SCADA)
  • Systematic commissioning workflow, Troubleshooting and root cause analysis, Vendor coordination and FAT/SAT involvement
  • Strong communication and stakeholder coordination, Leadership and team supervision, Problem-solving and decision-making under pressure
  • Bachelor's Degree in: Chemical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Environmental Engineering.
  • Professional certifications (preferred): Commissioning certifications, Safety certifications (e.g., NEBOSH)
  • 8–15 years of experience in water treatment / UPW systems.
  • Proven experience in commissioning large-scale UPW plants.
  • Experience in industries such as: Semiconductor manufacturing, Pharmaceuticals, Electronics / Data centers
  • Willingness to travel or work at remote project locations
  • Strong coordination with multinational teams and vendors
