Job Title: Senior Mechanical Engineer
Job Description
The Senior Engineer serves as the technical lead for the design and development of wafer handling robots and automation equipment. This role focuses on end-to-end product design and detailing, from concept through verification and support for manufacturing and testing, ensuring robust, precise, and cost-effective mechanical solutions for semiconductor equipment and advanced automation systems.
Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical design of wafer handling robots and automation equipment, serving as the technical authority for key design decisions.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and engineering drawings using SolidWorks for complex mechanical systems.
- Design precision mechanical parts and assemblies, including robot arms, motion mechanisms, wafer grippers, and end-effectors.
- Perform tolerance analysis and tolerance stack-up to ensure proper fit, function, and reliability of mechanical assemblies.
- Conduct engineering calculations and component sizing to validate design performance and ensure compliance with functional requirements.
- Perform structural and modal analysis using ANSYS to assess mechanical integrity, stiffness, and dynamic behavior of components and assemblies.
- Troubleshoot mechanical design issues, identify root causes, and recommend effective design improvements and corrective actions.
- Select and integrate servo motors, linear actuators, gearboxes, bearings, ball screws, harmonic drives, pneumatic systems, and vacuum systems into robotic and automation solutions.
- Apply GD&T and best practices in engineering drawings to clearly define dimensional and geometric requirements.
- Utilize DFX principles (including design for manufacturability and design for excellence) to improve product quality, reliability, and ease of production.
- Support prototype development and production builds by collaborating closely with manufacturing teams and providing technical guidance.
- Work with suppliers to develop, qualify, and refine components, ensuring they meet design specifications and performance targets.
- Improve existing designs for manufacturability, quality, and cost, driving continuous improvement across products and processes.
- Prepare bills of materials (BOMs), specifications, and comprehensive technical documentation to support production, testing, and lifecycle management.
- Participate in customer and internal design reviews, presenting design concepts, analysis results, and risk assessments.
- Support product testing, evaluation, and validation activities to confirm that designs meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements.
- Apply root cause analysis methods, including fault tree analysis (FTA) and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), to identify and mitigate potential risks in mechanical designs.
- Use PLM tools such as Windchill to manage design data, configurations, and engineering change processes.
Essential Skills
- Strong fundamental knowledge of mechanical design principles and practices.
- Hands-on experience in designing robotic and automation systems, particularly wafer handling robots and related semiconductor equipment.
- Proficiency in precision mechanical design, including high-accuracy mechanisms and assemblies.
- Ability to create and interpret engineering drawings with GD&T for complex mechanical components and assemblies.
- Experience performing tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure reliable mechanical performance.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and detailing using SolidWorks.
- Experience conducting structural and modal analysis using ANSYS or similar finite element analysis tools.
- Knowledge and practical experience with DFX design engineering, including design for manufacturability and design for excellence.
- Experience applying root cause analysis techniques, including FTA and FMEA, to mechanical design and product issues.
- Knowledge of motion and automation components such as servo motors, linear actuators, bearings, harmonic drives, pneumatic systems, and vacuum systems.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and component sizing for mechanical and motion systems.
- Experience preparing BOMs, specifications, and technical documentation for engineering projects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or Automation Engineering.
- Experience designing wafer handling systems, grippers, and end-effectors for semiconductor or high-precision automation applications.
- Background in semiconductor equipment design or similar high-precision industrial machinery.
- Experience using PLM tools, particularly Windchill, for managing design data and specifications.
- Familiarity with vacuum systems and their integration into robotic and automation equipment.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and customers in design reviews and qualification activities.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a structured approach to troubleshooting complex mechanical and motion-related issues.
Work Environment
The role is centered in an engineering and product development environment focused on semiconductor equipment and advanced automation technologies. You will work extensively with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, analysis tools like ANSYS, and PLM systems including Windchill to design, analyze, and manage complex robotic and motion systems. The position involves close collaboration with manufacturing, testing, and supplier teams, supporting both prototype builds and production activities.
