Job Description
JOB DESCRIPTION
Ford Model E develops technologies and capabilities supporting electric vehicle platforms, batteries, electric motors, inverters, charging solutions, and recycling.
As a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer, you will design, develop, debug, and integrate embedded firmware for electric vehicle and power-electronics products. You will work with microcontroller-based systems in bare-metal and real-time operating system environments.
This hands-on role covers embedded C/C++ development, low-level driver integration, hardware bring-up, diagnostics, and firmware support for design-validation activities. You will collaborate with hardware, systems, and validation engineers to support product bring-up, automated testing, issue resolution, and production-release readiness.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware in C and C++ for microcontroller-based products.
- Develop firmware for bare-metal and real-time operating system environments.
- Implement and debug low-level device drivers, boot sequences, diagnostics, communication interfaces, and application-level firmware.
- Support board bring-up and hardware-software integration.
- Investigate system issues and perform root-cause analysis using embedded debugging interfaces and laboratory equipment.
- Develop diagnostic functions, test modes, data-logging capabilities, calibration support, and automation interfaces for product design validation.
- Create scripts and lightweight tools for test automation, log analysis, regression checks, and validation support.
- Collaborate with hardware, systems, test, and validation teams to resolve integration issues.
- Participate in code reviews, defect triage, integration testing, technical documentation, and release-readiness activities.
- Follow applicable software-development, coding-quality, and configuration-management processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, computer engineering, computer science, embedded systems, or a related discipline.
- At least five years of hands-on embedded firmware development experience in automotive, electric vehicle, industrial, power-electronics, or another high-reliability product environment.
- Strong programming skills in embedded C, with working knowledge of C++.
- Experience developing firmware in bare-metal or real-time operating system environments.
- Understanding of interrupts, timers, memory management, watchdogs, microcontroller peripherals, and real-time debugging.
- Experience with one or more embedded communication interfaces, such as Controller Area Network, Controller Area Network Flexible Data-Rate, Serial Peripheral Interface, Inter-Integrated Circuit, Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter, Ethernet, Local Interconnect Network, or Modbus.
- Hands-on experience using relevant laboratory and debugging tools, such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, power supplies, JTAG or Serial Wire Debug debuggers, and protocol analyzers.
- Experience supporting product validation through firmware diagnostics, test modes, logging, automation interfaces, or regression testing.
- Working knowledge of Git-based version control, code reviews, defect tracking, and technical documentation.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with hardware, systems, and validation teams.
Preferred Requirements
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: automotive electronics, electric vehicle supply equipment, vehicle charging, battery management systems, inverters, power electronics, or safety-critical embedded products.
- Familiarity with MISRA C coding guidelines, ISO 26262 functional safety, Automotive Software Process Improvement and Capability Determination, or comparable regulated software-development processes.
- Experience with Unified Diagnostic Services, diagnostic trouble codes, software-in-the-loop testing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or automated bench testing.
- Experience using Python for test automation, tooling, or log analysis.
- Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines, static-analysis tools, and embedded unit-testing frameworks.
- Experience with Vector tools such as CANalyzer or CANoe.
