Job Description

Sr. Structural Design Engineer – PEB Design Team

Location: Chennai (IITM Research Park) | Experience: 5–10 Years | Type: Full-Time, Onsite

Role Overview

We are looking for a Sr. Structural Design Engineer to lead the structural design and analysis of Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) systems within our design team. You will own the end-to-end design of steel and RCC elements — from initial concept and code compliance through to fabrication drawings, BOMs, and erection-ready documentation — ensuring every structure is buildable, cost-efficient, and manufacturer with minimum on-site skill dependency.

Role in the Team

  • Report to the Lead Engineer – Design and collaborate closely with the BIM Lead, estimation, procurement, and site erection teams.
  • Serve as the primary structural authority on assigned PEB projects — owning design calculations, code compliance, and drawing approvals.
  • Guide and review the work of junior design engineers and detailers, maintaining quality and consistency across deliverables.
  • Represent structural engineering in project coordination meetings, design reviews, and third-party/IITM validation submissions.
  • Collaborate with the BIM Lead to ensure structural models, shop drawings, and BOMs are accurate and fabrication-ready.
  • Champion DFMA principles within the team — designing for minimum-skill manufacturing and on-site erection at scale.

Key Responsibilities

Structural Design & Analysis

  • Design and analyse PEB steel structures, LGSF systems, and RCC elements in compliance with IS 800, IS 875, IS 456, and IS 1893.
  • Apply DFMA principles to optimise designs for efficient factory fabrication, module assembly, and on-site erection.
  • Prepare and review structural calculations, connection designs, anchor bolt layouts, and foundation interface details.
  • Coordinate with architects and MEP engineers to integrate structural solutions with overall building design.

Documentation & BOM

  • Develop detailed structural BOMs specifying all steel and RCC components with quantities aligned to procurement needs.
  • Produce clear fabrication drawings with dimensions, tolerances, weld specifications, bolt-hole locations, and surface treatment requirements.
  • Collaborate with the BIM team to extract model-based BOQs and ensure zero mismatch between design, procurement, and site quantities.
  • Support the estimation team with approximate superstructure and substructure quantities at the tendering stage.

Quality, Approvals & Site Coordination

  • Prepare and submit structural design documents for vetting by IITM or other designated approval bodies; address review comments promptly.
  • Specify steel grades and certifications; review mill certificates to ensure materials meet IS standards.
  • Collaborate with the BIM Lead on detailed erection drawings covering erection sequence, bolt tightening, and lifting procedures.
  • Conduct site inspections during erection to verify compliance with drawings; maintain QC documentation for inspections and non-conformance.

Process & Continuous Improvement

  • Contribute to and maintain design SOPs, standard calculation templates, and drawing checklists for the PEB design team.
  • Identify and implement value engineering opportunities to improve project margins without compromising structural integrity.
  • Stay current with advances in PEB technology, modular construction methods, and updates to relevant IS codes.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • B.E. / B.Tech in Civil or Structural Engineering (mandatory). M.E. / M.Tech in Structural Engineering is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with ISO 19650 and COBie standards is an advantage.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, or ETABS for structural analysis and design.
  • Strong knowledge of PEB systems: primary rigid frames, secondary members, bracing, purlins, girts, eave struts, and connection detailing.
  • Working knowledge of BIM tools — Revit or Tekla Structures — for model review and structural coordination.
  • Understanding of DFMA and PFMEA principles for prefabricated and modular construction.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D drawing production and shop drawing review.
  • Familiarity with welding standards (AWS/IS 7215) and fabrication QC procedures.

Experience & Mindset

  • 5–10 years of experience in structural/PEB design, with at least 2 years on PEB or prefab/modular construction projects.
  • Proven track record delivering structural designs from concept through fabrication and erection on steel structure projects.
  • High attention to detail, strong documentation discipline, and a collaborative, ownership-driven mindset.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with overlapping project demands and cross-functional teams.
