PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The
Senior PostgreSQL Migration & Performance Engineer will support the re-enablement of PostgreSQL for the organization's enterprise web application platform. The role is responsible for analyzing database compatibility gaps, optimizing SQL queries and performance, and helping establish a scalable dual-database architecture supporting both Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
The position will work closely with Development, QE, and DevOps teams to improve database maintainability, support migration and CI/CD modernization initiatives, and ensure stable, high-performance operation across enterprise customer environments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Other duties may be assigned
- Review, optimize, and benchmark SQL queries, joins, indexes, and reporting workloads for both PostgreSQL and SQL Server environments.
- Analyze existing application database architecture and identify MSSQL-specific implementations impacting PostgreSQL compatibility.
- Design and recommend scalable dual-database compatibility approaches including query abstraction, dialect handling, and schema standardization.
- Assist QE and DevOps teams in establishing automated database certification, regression validation, and CI/CD execution strategies for MSSQL and PostgreSQL.
- Troubleshoot database-related production and non-production issues including slow queries, deadlocks, locking behavior, and migration failures.
- Review execution plans and recommend indexing, partitioning, caching, or architectural improvements to improve application scalability and stability.
- Provide technical guidance and best practices for PostgreSQL administration, performance tuning, schema evolution, and enterprise deployment strategies.
- Document compatibility findings, optimization recommendations, migration approaches, and operational best practices for long-term engineering sustainability.
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of relevant experience.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Strong experience in SQL query optimization, execution plan analysis, indexing strategies, and database performance tuning for large-scale enterprise applications.
- Experience working with Java/Spring/Hibernate or similar enterprise application stacks, including understanding ORM-generated SQL and repository/query-layer design.
- Strong experience with native SQL development, complex joins, reporting queries, bulk data processing, and performance-sensitive database operations.
- The ideal candidate should be proficient in AI-driven coding techniques, specifically using GitHub Copilot and MCP (Model Context Protocol) to enhance development speed and automate repetitive tasks.
- Proven experience supporting or migrating applications between MSSQL and PostgreSQL environments.
- Solid understanding of PostgreSQL internals including locking, transactions, vacuum/autovacuum, partitioning, and concurrency management.
- Familiarity with Docker-based environments, automated database validation pipelines, and enterprise software deployment processes.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills with ability to work effectively across Development, QE, DevOps, and Product teams.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL monitoring and observability tools
- Exposure to large-scale reporting, analytics, ETL, or high-volume transactional systems.
- Prior consulting or architecture experience guiding database modernization, migration, or cross-platform compatibility initiatives.
- Experience supporting enterprise on-premise or self-hosted software products with multi-version upgrade and database migration requirements.
