Job Description

Role: Senior Data Infrastructure Engineer (SDE3)

Function: Data Infrastructure / Platform Engineering

Location: Bengaluru

Type: Full-time

Industry: Information Technology & Services, Computer Software, Fintech

About Company

An enterprise tech startup founded in 2016 and based in Bengaluru. The company builds India's paperless digital infrastructure — covering digital identity verification, legal e-signing, document automation, eNACH payment automation, and e-KYC.

It serves 1,500+ enterprises and 100 million individual users. The company runs lean at 90 people, with 40 engineers, and operates at the intersection of financial inclusion and regulatory-grade reliability.

Its culture rewards ownership, first-principles thinking, and craftsmanship over process.

Position Overview

This is a founding seat on the company's Platform Pod — a greenfield infrastructure team with a P0 mandate. As the Data Infrastructure SME, you will own the entire database estate: performance, replication, backup/DR, capacity, and cost across high-throughput transactional systems underpinning payments, identity, e-sign, and compliance products. You will also define the data-layer standards and self-serve tooling that product teams across a 40-engineer organisation depend on.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end health of the database estate — performance tuning, replication topology, backup/DR, version upgrades, capacity planning, and cost optimisation across high-volume transactional systems
  • Define and enforce schema design, migration, and query standards for product teams, reducing production incidents caused by upstream data-layer decisions
  • Build observability and alerting coverage for the data layer — slow-query detection, replication lag, storage growth, and connection saturation — integrated into the Platform Pod's production-access governance model
  • Drive the estate toward self-serve and DBaaS-style offerings for internal product teams, reducing ad-hoc DBA dependency and enabling rotation-friendly operations
  • Establish and maintain SLAs for core data infrastructure, including RTO/RPO targets, and own incident response and post-mortem discipline for data-layer failures
  • Collaborate with the Platform Pod on production-access governance — ensuring no other team requires direct database access through automation, audited break-glass procedures, and runbook coverage
  • Partner with product engineering teams on data modelling, indexing strategy, and query review as the organisation scales

Must Have Criteria

  • 5–8 years operating production database systems at high transactional volume, with hands-on ownership of performance tuning, replication, backup/DR, and capacity planning
  • Deep expertise in at least two of MySQL or PostgreSQL — including internals, query optimisation, index strategy, and version upgrade management
  • Demonstrated experience designing and enforcing schema migration discipline and query standards for multi-team engineering organisations
  • Experience building database observability: slow-query analysis, replication lag monitoring, storage forecasting, and connection pool management in production
  • Experience with backup/DR design including RTO/RPO definition, recovery testing, and automated failover at scale

Nice to Have

  • Experience with TiDB or other distributed SQL / NewSQL systems in production
  • Familiarity with DBaaS platform design or self-serve data infrastructure tooling for internal engineering teams
  • Exposure to regulated environments — banking, fintech, or payment infrastructure — with awareness of compliance and audit requirements around data access
  • Experience with database packaging and upgrade automation for software distributed to customer or restricted environments
  • Contributions to or ownership of production-access governance tooling (break-glass workflows, audit logging, access automation)

What We Offer

  • Founding seat on the Platform Pod — greenfield mandate with P0 priority and direct influence over infrastructure decisions across a 40-engineer organisation
  • Ownership of a domain that touches every product — payments, identity, e-sign, and compliance — with real SLA accountability
  • Lean, high-trust environment: 90-person company where platform decisions ship fast and your work is visible to leadership
