Job Description

Job Overview:

The Senior Credit Officer is responsible for overseeing the end-to-end credit approval and portfolio management process to ensure that lending decisions align with the bank's credit policies, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements. The role provides independent credit assessment, supports business growth through sound risk evaluation, and ensures the quality and sustainability of the bank's lending portfolio. The Senior Credit Officer also serves as a subject matter expert by mentoring junior credit staff and collaborating with business units and Head Office on complex credit matters.

Job Responsibilities

1. Credit Assessment & Approval

  • Evaluate and approve corporate, institutional, and commercial lending proposals within delegated lending authority.
  • Conduct comprehensive credit risk assessments by reviewing borrowers financial statements, cash flow, business performance, industry outlook, repayment capacity, and collateral.
  • Assess the appropriateness of credit structures, facility terms, covenants, and security arrangements.
  • Prepare and review credit memoranda with clear recommendations supported by sound credit analysis.
  • Provide independent and balanced credit opinions that align with the Bank's risk appetite while supporting prudent business growth.
  • Escalate complex or high-risk credit proposals to the appropriate approval authorities when required.

2. Credit Portfolio Management & Monitoring

  • Monitor the quality and performance of the Bank's credit portfolio to identify early warning signs and emerging credit risks.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of existing credit facilities to ensure continued creditworthiness and compliance with approved terms.
  • Monitor portfolio concentrations, industry exposure, and risk trends, recommending appropriate mitigation measures where necessary.
  • Follow up on deteriorating accounts and recommend corrective actions, restructuring, or enhanced monitoring where appropriate.
  • Support portfolio reporting and analysis for management and Head Office.

3. Risk Management & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure all credit approvals and reviews comply with the Bank's internal credit policies, risk management framework, delegated lending authority, and regulatory requirements.
  • Apply the Bank's internal credit rating methodologies and risk assessment standards consistently.
  • Identify, assess, and recommend appropriate mitigants for credit, operational, and regulatory risks associated with lending proposals.
  • Stay informed of changes in banking regulations, market developments, and industry practices that may impact credit decisions.
  • Support internal and external audits, regulatory reviews, and compliance examinations related to credit activities.

4. Business Partnership & Stakeholder Management

  • Collaborate closely with Relationship Managers and Business Development teams to provide timely and practical credit solutions.
  • Engage constructively with business units to understand customers financing needs while maintaining sound credit discipline.
  • Liaise with Head Office, Risk Management, Compliance, Legal, and other internal stakeholders on credit-related matters.
  • Provide balanced risk perspectives and recommendations to facilitate informed lending decisions.

5. Leadership, Coaching & Knowledge Sharing

  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior Credit Officers and Credit Analysts.
  • Review the quality and consistency of credit analyses prepared by junior team members.
  • Share best practices in credit analysis, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support staff development through coaching, knowledge transfer, and on-the-job training.

6. Process Improvement & Operational Excellence

  • Participate in the review and enhancement of credit policies, procedures, and approval processes.
  • Recommend improvements to strengthen credit risk management, operational efficiency, and service quality.
  • Support the implementation of new systems, process enhancements, and Head Office initiatives related to credit management.
  • Maintain accurate and timely credit documentation and records.

7. Other Duties

  • Undertake additional assignments, special projects, and ad hoc responsibilities as assigned by the Branch Manager or Head Office.
  • Contribute to branch and departmental initiatives that support the Bank's strategic objectives.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in credit risk evaluation, portfolio monitoring, corporate/institutional/commercial lending, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of financial modelling, analytical skills, credit principles and banking practices, regulatory requirements, rating mechanisms, and risk management.
  • Excellent analytical skills, including evaluating financial statements and credit reports.
  • Able to provide thoughtful and balanced risk perspectives to business lines.
  • Good communication and organization skills.
  • Proficiency in MS office application.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Chinese to enable effective communication with head office. .
