The CFD Engineer is responsible for performing advanced computational simulations to analyze and optimize fluid flow, heat transfer, and related phenomena in process equipment and systems. This role supports technology development, process design, and troubleshooting for licensed technologies, ensuring high performance, safety, and energy efficiency. The CFD Engineer collaborates with R&D, Process Engineering, Technology BU, CED, and Mechanical Engineering teams to deliver innovative solutions that enhance Lummus technology portfolio and maintain its competitive edge. This role involves developing detailed simulations, mentoring junior CFD engineers, and providing strategic technical direction to improve product performance and efficiency.

Responsibilities And Duties

  • Perform CFD simulations for process equipment such as reactors, heat exchangers, furnaces, and separation devices.
  • Analyze fluid dynamics, heat transfer, combustion, mass transfer and multiphase flow to optimize equipment design and performance.
  • Validate CFD models using experimental data and plant performance results.
  • Develop fluid-structure interaction (FSI) models by coupling CFD with structural finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Support new technology development by providing CFD insights for conceptual and detailed design.
  • Contribute to digitalization initiatives by integrating CFD with process simulation and AI-driven optimization tools.
  • Collaborate with Process Technology and Mechanical Engineers to improve equipment design for efficiency, reliability, and safety.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and design guidelines based on CFD studies.
  • Document best practices and maintain a CFD knowledge base for the organization.
  • Stay updated on CFD software advancements (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM) and implement best practices. Identify opportunities to reduce computational time and improve model accuracy.

Requirements

  • Education, Experience or any other specific requirement.
  • Proficiency in CFD tools (ANSYS Fluent, Fluent DPM, STAR-CCM+).
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mass transfer and heat transfer.
  • Experience with multiphase flow, turbulence models, and combustion modeling.
  • Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, VBA, or C++ for automation and customization of CFD workflows.
  • Ability to perform parametric studies to optimize processes based on CFD results.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and ability to work in cross-functional teams.

  • Timely completion of CFD studies supporting technology development and design.
  • At least 1 process improvement or design optimization annually based on CFD insights.
  • Development of CFD best practices and training sessions.
