Job Description

The Role

To have overall responsibility for the supervision of the assessment of care needs and the delivery and maintenance of optimal care outcomes, ensuring that the highest

standard of personalised nursing care is delivered to patients, in partnership with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.

The post holder will provide clinical and managerial leadership to the Ophthalmology staff team.

Key Responsibilities

CLINICAL

  • Provide clinical leadership to improve quality, efficiency, and standards of care.
  • Develop and maintain expert practice across departmental services.
  • Lead and manage clinical and managerial change, promoting innovation and patient-centred care.
  • Supervise, deploy, and develop staff to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care programmes based on patient need.
  • Ensure clear, timely, and compliant clinical documentation.
  • Maintain effective communication with multidisciplinary teams, patients, and relatives, ensuring evidence-based practice.
  • Develop local protocols and guidelines to support safe and competent nursing practice.
  • Act as a role model and mentor for staff.

MANAGERIAL

  • Manage resources efficiently, including procurement of non-stock items.
  • Lead recruitment and selection of staff.
  • Investigate complaints promptly and implement action plans.
  • Ensure compliance with professional codes, organisational policies, and procedures.
  • Lead workforce planning, HR management, and staff wellbeing.
  • Safeguard patients, visitors, and staff through effective risk management and incident reporting.
  • Ensure regular staff appraisals, PDPs, and one-to-one meetings.
  • Contribute to senior nurse meetings and directorate operational management.
  • Lead service developments and improvement projects.
  • Ensure safe management of patients personal belongings.

EDUCATION

  • Lead development of competency-based training and role expansion programmes.
  • Ensure nurse development programmes are implemented and accurately recorded.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through ongoing education and appraisal.
  • Promote research, audit, and continuous service improvement.
  • Foster a supportive environment for staff development.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Promote safety and ensure compliance with health, safety, and infection control policies.
  • Identify, manage, and report clinical risks using organisational systems.
  • Keep updated on health and safety legislation and inform staff accordingly.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Training and/or qualification(s) required

NMC Registration

Suitable level of experience at Band 6

Post Registration Qualification pertinent to Specialty is essential

Graduate level of education - desirable

Evidence of continuing professional development

Excellent clinical knowledge

Excellent Leadership skills

Excellent communication skills

Good mediation skills

Good time management

Good organisational skills.

Effective decision making and problem solving skills

Self motivated, articulate and assertive.

Clinical assessment qualification

Non medical prescriber qualification.
