Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior Bioinformatics Scientist with a strong background in human genetics, genomics, rare-disease research, phenotype analysis, and computational biology.

The person should be able to independently review computational biomedical research, evaluate methodology and scientific interpretation, identify limitations, and guide a research team toward scientifically defensible conclusions.

The role requires strong scientific judgement in addition to technical bioinformatics expertise.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review computational genomics and bioinformatics research methodology.
  • Evaluate experimental design, controls, assumptions, reproducibility and scientific interpretation.
  • Review phenotype-driven gene prioritisation approaches.
  • Provide guidance on Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO), phenotype–gene relationships and rare-disease genetics.
  • Review bioinformatics datasets, analysis outputs and scientific evidence.
  • Assess whether conclusions are adequately supported by the underlying data.
  • Identify methodological weaknesses, confounders or possible overinterpretation.
  • Review statistical and sensitivity analyses in collaboration with technical/statistics resources where required.
  • Review scientific figures, result summaries and research communication for accuracy.
  • Guide junior bioinformatics/research resources when required.
  • Support scientific literature review and interpretation of relevant prior research.
  • Participate in periodic scientific review meetings and milestone discussions.
  • Help maintain high standards of reproducibility, documentation and scientific integrity.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Human Genetics, Biomedical Informatics or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong experience in computational genomics or bioinformatics research.
  • Good understanding of human genetics and gene–disease relationships.
  • Experience working with genomic, phenotype or biomedical datasets.
  • Strong scientific research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to critically review research methodology and interpretation.
  • Familiarity with Python and/or R.
  • Understanding of statistics used in biomedical research.
  • Ability to explain complex scientific concepts clearly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Highly Preferred
  • Experience in rare-disease genomics or clinical genomics.
  • Experience with Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) or phenotype-based analysis.
  • Experience with phenotype-to-gene prioritisation or gene–disease databases.
  • Familiarity with semantic-similarity approaches.
  • Experience reviewing research publications or manuscripts.
  • Previous mentoring, scientific advisory or research-supervision experience.
  • Knowledge of reproducible computational-research practices, Git/versioning and documented analytical pipelines.
Engagement Expectations

This is a part-time contract engagement, not a full-time role.

The initial engagement is expected to run for approximately 2–3 months, with involvement concentrated around scientific-review milestones, research discussions and final interpretation.

The selected person should be comfortable working independently and providing clear written recommendations after each review milestone.
