As a Software Engineer at Applied Materials, you'll dive deep into ground-breaking technologies-like machine learning and AI-to craft novel software solutions that solve our customers high-value problems. Our Software Engineers are responsible for designing, prototyping, developing, and debugging software solutions for semiconductor equipment components and devices to ensure quality and functionality. You'll develop software documentation and test procedures, troubleshoot software problems, and communicate with internal customers to understand project requirements. As part of our team, you'll contribute your expertise in intricate systems, deciphering code, and anticipating software behaviors to ensure Applied remains the leader in the semiconductor and display sectors.Senior Architect (Hands-On, Multi-Stack & Cloud Modernization)
Role Summary
We are looking for a highly experienced Senior Architect who can operate across legacy and modern systems, drive large-scale modernization, and remain deeply hands-on in building production systems.
This role requires strong ownership, technical depth, and the ability to lead from the front through coding and execution.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build, and evolve middleware and API platforms with hands-on development
Drive modernization from legacy MVC / monolithic applications to microservices and cloud-native architectures
Develop Python-based microservices (FastAPI) and APIs using REST, gRPC, and GraphQL
Own system architecture across application, data, and integration layers
Partner with platform teams on Kubernetes/OpenShift, CI/CD pipelines, scalability, observability, and reliability
Drive adoption of GenAI-assisted development for code generation, refactoring, SQL optimization, and developer productivity
Lead resolution of complex production issues (performance, data, integrations)
Mentor engineers through coding, design sessions, and hands-on guidance
Act as a technical bridge between stakeholders and delivery teams, ensuring alignment and execution
Hands-On Expectations (Mandatory)
Writes production-grade code on a regular basis (not a review-only role)
Personally builds critical services, PoCs, and complex features
Deep involvement in debugging, performance tuning, and root cause analysis
Strong expertise in SQL optimization (CTEs, complex queries, performance tuning)
Contributes to CI/CD pipelines, deployments, and operational improvements
Practices pair programming and deep code reviews
Uses AI developer tools actively in daily engineering workflows
Required Qualifications
15+ years of experience in software engineering with strong architectural depth
Proven experience leading teams or multiple squads with delivery ownership
Strong hands-on experience in:
Python (FastAPI) microservices
API design (REST, gRPC, GraphQL)
Relational databases (Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle)
Experience in cloud-native development and Kubernetes environments
Hands-on usage of GenAI tools (Copilot, Claude, Codex, etc.)
Strong debugging, system design, and performance optimization skills
Excellent communication and stakeholder management

Strong ownership mindset - drives execution, not just design
Leads by example through hands-on contributions
Comfortable working in ambiguous environments with evolving architecture
Focus on pragmatic decision-making and delivery outcomes
