SAP BI / BW Consultant Job Description
Role Overview
The SAP BI/BW Consultant is responsible for supporting SAP BW planning solutions and day‑to‑day BW operations, designing analytical queries and planning functions, and partnering closely with business users to deliver reliable, high‑quality reporting and planning insights.
Key Responsibilities
- Support SAP BW and Integrated Planning (BW-IP / BPC / Analysis for Office) solutions for business planning and reporting needs
- Design, develop, and optimize BW queries, key figures, restricted and calculated measures
- Build and maintain planning functions, planning sequences, and input-ready queries
- Assist business users with requirements gathering, issue resolution, and report enhancements
- Monitor and support BW operational activities, including data loads, process chains, and performance troubleshooting
- Perform data validation, reconciliation, and root-cause analysis for reporting discrepancies
- Collaborate with functional teams to translate business needs into technical BW solutions
- Improve query and system performance through aggregation, indexing, and modeling best practices
- Create and maintain technical documentation, functional specs, and user guides
- Provide end-user training and ongoing support for planning and reporting tools
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong experience with SAP BW / BW on HANA
- Hands-on expertise in:
- BW Queries (BEx / Analysis for Office)
- InfoProviders (DSO, Cube, CompositeProvider)
- Calculated & Restricted Key Figures
- Experience supporting planning scenarios (BW-IP, BPC Embedded, or similar)
- Good understanding of data modeling and ETL concepts
- Ability to analyze business requirements and deliver scalable BI solutions
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Experience supporting business users in a production environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Exposure to SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) or BPC Embedded
- Knowledge of ABAP debugging for BW (read-only / basic troubleshooting)
- Experience with financial or supply chain planning use cases
- Understanding of authorization concepts in SAP BW
Soft Skills
- Business-focused mindset with strong stakeholder engagement
- Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and able to handle multiple priorities
- Strong documentation and communication skills
