Job Description : Circle Safety Officer (CSO)
Role Purpose
The Circle Safety Officer (CSO) owns circle-level Workplace Safety governance for Bharti Airtel across offices, technical sites and partner/contractor operations—ensuring policy deployment, statutory compliance, ISO 45001/14001 readiness, incident governance, proactive risk reduction and safety culture strengthening.
Role Context (Scope & Stakeholders)
- Reporting to: Circle Leadership and Central Safety Governance (Bharti Airtel), as per organization structure.
- Scope: All Bharti Airtel offices, technical locations, warehouses and operational/field activities within the circle, including partner and contractor work executed for Bharti Airtel.
- Key stakeholders: Circle Security & Facility teams, Network, Operations/Technical teams, Circle Safety Committee, HR, Legal, supplier management, Central Safety team, External auditors, and local statutory authorities
Key Accountabilities
Governance, Compliance & Audits
- Lead circle implementation of Bharti Airtel's safety policies & governance framework, including applicable statutory requirements.
- Analyze, review and lead circle implementation of safety protocols, including training and capability building; mentor circle security/facility/business teams to sustain safe working conditions.
- Plan and conduct risk-based audits/inspections across critical technical and office locations; support customer/regulatory audits as applicable.
- Support ISO 45001/14001 audits and surveillance & internal audits and drive timely closure of observations.
- Prepare site-wise risk assessments/risk registers and track non-compliances/closures with escalation for slippages; incorporate safety requirements at design/takeover stage for new/modified facilities.
Incident Governance & Proactive Reporting
- Monitor all incidents, unsafe conditions and near misses; ensure investigation and RCA for each case and facilitate medical response/treatment coordination where required.
- Ensure prompt reporting, investigation, documentation, RCA and CAPA for all incidents.
- Drive prevention through CAPA effectiveness checks, trend monitoring and proactive audits/field visits (minimum 3 sites/month), with escalation for repeat violations.
Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)
- Lead circle OHS program: onboarding(induction)/refreshers and periodic trainings/toolbox talks/awareness programs; coordinate sessions in advance to ensure maximum participation.
- Ensure adequacy and usage of PPE and safety controls; conduct inspections/visits to identify hazards and track them until corrected; investigate and report job-related health or safety concerns promptly.
- Own circle-level OHS inputs for ESG/BRSR reporting with traceable documentation.
Fire Safety & Emergency Preparedness
- Review and track fire safety compliance across facilities (detection/alarm/suppression/evacuation systems) as per policy and statutory norms.
- Maintain liaison/escalation with emergency departments/authorities; drive mock drills and improvement actions, including modernization/integration roadmap for fire safety and mitigation/control systems.
Safety Culture & Circle Governance
- Own circle safety communication and awareness; drive employee engagement and proactive reporting.
- Publish/maintain training content (presentations/SOPs/Emailers/AV briefs) aligned to Airtel governance expectations.
- Run Circle Safety Committee governance and action closures; maintain audit-ready evidence for audits, trainings, incidents, RCAs/CAPAs and drill records on designated repositories.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum graduate; post-graduation/diploma in Safety, Occupational Health, Environmental Engineering or related discipline preferred.
- CQI-IRCA certified Lead Auditor for ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 preferred; NEBOSH certification is an added advantage.
- Prior experience in OHS/EHS roles in telecom/infrastructure/manufacturing and/or service sectors will be an advantage.
Key Skills
- ISO 45001/14001 and statutory OHS/fire compliance knowledge; strong audit evidence orientation.
- Incident investigation, RCA/CAPA governance and closure discipline (timelines, effectiveness verification).
- Stakeholder management across facilities/operations/partners; ability to influence and drive closures.
- Strong documentation and communication; training design and delivery capability.
- MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint proficiency and comfort with safety portals/ reporting systems.
