Job Description – Safety Officer / Safety Engineer

Job Title: Safety Officer / Safety Engineer

Department: Safety / EHS

Location: Project Site / HO with site travel

Reports To: Project Manager / Head – EHS / General Manager – Projects

Job Purpose

To ensure implementation of safety, health, and environmental standards at high-rise building, township, and commercial building project sites by identifying risks, enforcing safe work practices, conducting inspections, training site teams, and ensuring compliance with statutory and company safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement site safety plans, EHS policies, procedures, and statutory safety requirements at project sites.
  • Ensure all construction activities are carried out in compliance with safety norms, work permits, method statements, and risk assessments.
  • Conduct daily site safety inspections and identify unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and potential hazards.
  • Monitor safety compliance for high-risk activities such as working at height, scaffolding, excavation, lifting operations, hot work, electrical work, confined space work, and material handling.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE by workers, staff, subcontractors, and visitors at site.
  • Conduct toolbox talks, safety induction, training programs, mock drills, and awareness sessions for workers and site teams.
  • Review and maintain safety documentation including permits, checklists, inspection reports, training records, incident reports, and statutory registers.
  • Coordinate with project execution teams, contractors, subcontractors, and consultants for implementation of safe work practices.
  • Inspect scaffolding, formwork, lifting tools and tackles, cranes, hoists, passenger/material lifts, and temporary electrical installations.
  • Ensure safety compliance in vertical transportation, façade works, MEP works, finishing works, and external development works.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences; prepare reports and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Monitor housekeeping, access routes, barricading, signage, edge protection, fire safety, and emergency preparedness at site.
  • Ensure availability and maintenance of firefighting equipment, first-aid facilities, emergency exits, and rescue arrangements.
  • Conduct safety audits and follow up for closure of non-conformities within defined timelines.
  • Support project team in preparing HIRA, JSA, method statements, emergency response plans, and lifting plans.
  • Ensure contractor safety compliance through regular review meetings, worker verification, safety performance monitoring, and penalty/reward systems.
  • Coordinate with statutory authorities, client safety teams, and internal audit teams during inspections and audits.
  • Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly safety MIS reports to project leadership and management.
  • Promote a positive safety culture across the project site and ensure zero tolerance for unsafe practices.

Qualification

  • Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Civil / Mechanical / Electrical Engineering
  • Diploma / Degree in Industrial Safety / Construction Safety preferred
  • Certification in First Aid, Fire Safety, Work at Height, Scaffolding Safety, or Lifting Safety preferred

Experience

  • Safety Officer: 3 to 8 years of experience in building construction, preferably high-rise, township, or commercial building projects
  • Safety Engineer: 5 to 12 years of experience in construction safety, with exposure to large-scale residential, commercial, or mixed-use projects

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of construction safety practices and statutory safety requirements
  • Understanding of high-rise construction risks and safety control measures
  • Knowledge of work permits, HIRA, JSA, method statements, and safety audits
  • Ability to conduct safety training, toolbox talks, and emergency drills
  • Good knowledge of scaffolding, lifting operations, electrical safety, fire safety, and working-at-height safety
  • Incident investigation and root-cause analysis skills
  • Strong observation, reporting, and documentation skills
  • Ability to coordinate with contractors, workers, engineers, and management
  • Good communication and enforcement skills
  • Proactive approach toward hazard identification and risk prevention
