Job Title: Research Mentor (Mathematics)
Location: Remote
Employment Type: Part-Time
Company: Let's Unbound
Role Overview
We are looking for mathematically mature researchers to mentor high school students through open-ended, research-style exploration in mathematics.
This is not a tutoring or Olympiad coaching role.
Mentors work with students to help them move from curiosity to precise questions, from intuition to formal structure, and from exploratory ideas to well-organized research-style outputs.
The role is suited for individuals who enjoy abstraction, problem formulation, proof-based reasoning, and guiding others through deep mathematical thinking.
What You'll Do
• Guide students from curiosity → conjecture → framework → structured investigation
• Help students formulate non-trivial and feasible mathematical questions
• Mentor students in areas such as:
o Number Theory
o Combinatorics
o Graph Theory
o Probability
o Algebra
o Geometry
o Dynamical Systems
o Applied Mathematics / Mathematical Modeling
• Translate advanced ideas into first principles understanding
• Help students build toy models, simplified proofs, or computations where appropriate
• Support literature exploration and development of conceptual clarity
• Provide detailed feedback on reasoning, argument structure, and written exposition
• Encourage independent problem solving rather than template-driven solutions
Who This Role Is For
We are particularly interested in candidates with backgrounds in:
• Pure Mathematics
• Applied Mathematics
• Mathematical Physics
• Theoretical Computer Science
• Probability and Statistics
Required Qualifications
• Current or completed PhD in Mathematics or a closely related quantitative field
• Strong record of research or advanced problem-solving experience
• Deep comfort with abstraction, proofs, and mathematical reasoning
• Ability to explain difficult concepts with clarity and precision
• High ownership, reliability, and attention to detail
Researchers from IITs, IISc, ISI, CMI, and leading international universities are encouraged to apply.
Preferred Experience
• Prior mentoring, supervision, or teaching experience
• Experience guiding exploratory or open-ended projects
• Strong mathematical writing and exposition skills
• Familiarity with research-level mathematical thinking beyond standard coursework
What Sets This Role Apart
• Focus on mathematical research thinking, not curriculum delivery
• Opportunity to guide motivated students through genuine exploration
• High intellectual autonomy in designing and mentoring projects
• Work with high-ability students in a structured mentorship environment
Key Responsibilities
Research Guidance & Project Development
Work 1-on-1 with students to refine questions, develop frameworks, and guide structured exploration.
Conceptual Mentorship
Build strong foundational understanding by breaking down sophisticated ideas into accessible but rigorous components.
Writing & Output Development
Support students in organizing ideas into clear, logically structured research papers or project reports.
Progress Tracking & Accountability
Maintain steady progress through regular sessions, feedback loops, and milestone planning.
