Professor: Deepak Jena

Deepak Jena is an Assistant Professor of Strategy at the Indian School of Business (ISB). He researches on innovation management and examines questions in two interrelated areas (1) what enables inventors and invention teams to generate high-value inventions and (2) what factors aid or abet a firm's pursuit to appropriate value from its innovations. In the first area, Professor Jena examines factors such as gender composition of invention teams and the role of inventor's prior patenting experience in influencing invention outcomes. In the second area, he examines how the possession and assertion of (or the lack of) intellectual property rights from patents influences the capture of economic value for the firms.

At ISB, he teaches electives on Growth Strategy and Strategic Innovation Management. Prior to his PhD from UNC Chapel Hill, Professor Jena worked for several years in the industry with Deloitte, TCS, LG Electronics, and WNS (Now part of Capgemini), primarily in the area of business and corporate strategy.

Professor Jena has worked extensively with research associates in the past and mentored several of them to get into the world's best PhD programs. Some of the programs, his RAs (or mentees) have gotten into the past are Berkeley (Hass), Cornell (SC Johnson), MIT (Sloan), Minnesota (Carlson), Washington (Foster), Colorado Boulder (Leeds), London Business School, Bocconi and Purdue University (Daniels).

Roles & Responsibilities:

You will:

• Assistance to the faculty Assisting in their ongoing research work which includes data collection, data management, and analysis.

1. Data collection and cleaning Collecting and cleaning data from websites or documents and compilation into usable formats for analysis.
2. Database management Linking different datasets, ensuring data quality, and processing raw data into processed datasets for modelling and estimation.
3. Data analysis Econometric analysis of cleaned data and causal estimation, including visualization and reporting.

• Time commitment: This role will be for a minimum of one year

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Qualifications:

• Strong academic background in any of Business Management/Economics/Computer Science/Statistics/Mathematics/Engineering with demonstrated analytical and communication skills.

Skills:

• Strong motivation to pursue a career in research in Strategy or Entrepreneurship
• Strong coding proficiency in Python/SQL. Working knowledge of Stata, R.
• Working knowledge of econometrics.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of various text mining algorithms and their use cases as well as text pre-processing and normalization techniques.
• Must be proactive with a strong motivation to learn.
