Technical Support Engineer (Measurement Instruments & Environmental Sensors)

Employment Type: Full-time Employee

Work Location: Toda City, Saitama Prefecture (Nearest Station: JR Toda-Koen Station)

Reports To: Technical Department Manager

Key Responsibilities

■ Job Description

At Campbell Scientific Japan, you will be responsible for providing technical support for data loggers and various sensors manufactured by our US headquarters. Although these are highly niche products, we will provide responsible guidance until you are able to handle them, as long as you are motivated.

Our customers are mainly universities, research institutions, government agencies, and infrastructure companies, and our products are used in a wide range of applications, including weather observation, environmental monitoring, civil engineering and disaster prevention, and energy.

The main duties are as follows.

  • Technical Support
  • Responding to customer inquiries about products
  • Explaining the specifications of data loggers and various sensors
  • Explaining how to use and configure products
  • Investigating causes and providing technical support when problems occur
  • System Installation & On-site Support
  • Installation and adjustment of observation equipment at sites
  • Consultations with customers and on-site support
  • Business trips to various locations within Japan (may require overnight stays)
  • Equipment Inspection & Repair Support
  • Troubleshooting and functional verification of malfunctioning equipment
  • Pre-repair inspection and testing (Actual repairs are primarily conducted at our US headquarters)
  • Arranging shipment of repair items to our US headquarters
  • Obtaining repair estimates and explaining them to customers
  • Reporting repair details and coordinating with customers
  • Measurement System Configuration and Programming

Data loggers use Campbell Scientific's proprietary programming language based on Basic. Training is provided until proficiency is achieved through OJT.

  • Creating data logger programs
  • Sensor configuration
  • Building measurement systems
  • Equipment Modification and Technical Work

Modifying and assembling equipment to meet customer applications

  • Sensor cable modification
  • Equipment assembly and adjustment
  • Light work using tools
  • Trade Show and Conference Support
  • Product display at trade shows and conferences
  • Technical explanations

■ Primary Sensors Handled

Sensors range from common types like thermometers, hygrometers, barometers, rain gauges, pyranometers, and anemometers to more specialized ones, requiring broad knowledge and continuous learning.

You will gain extensive knowledge of measurement technologies.

■ Required Qualifications

  • Ability to read English manuals or willingness to learn
  • Comfortable communicating via email in English with the US headquarters
  • Capable of customer support in Japanese (phone, visits, meetings)
  • Able to travel overnight for business trips
  • Possession of a standard driver's license and ability to drive safely

■ Preferred Experience/Skills


Candidates with the following experience are preferred:

  • Experience handling mechanical/electronic equipment
  • Knowledge of measurement instruments and sensors
  • Experience with meteorological observation equipment
  • Experience using data loggers
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits and measurement technology
  • Knowledge of network equipment

■ Software Used

  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Teams, etc.)
  • Data logger configuration software
  • Basic data analysis (primarily Excel)
  • 2D design drawing software

■ Desired Candidate Profile

  • Motivation to continuously learn new technologies
  • Ability to act proactively rather than passively
  • Ability to mediate and coordinate between customers, sales, and headquarters
  • Ability to identify customer needs through technical support and contribute to sales activities

Additionally, since the role involves not only office work but also field tasks (outdoor work, installation work, etc.), candidates comfortable with physically active work are welcome.
