Job Description
Equagen Engineers (equagen.com) is a multidisciplinary power engineering firm headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, serving the power, industrial, oil & gas, and commercial sectors. Its work spans protection & control panel manufacturing, transmission engineering, substation engineering, and power systems engineering services, with a growing focus on renewable energy including solar PV and BESS. Equagen is a certified minority-owned business (SBA 8(a), DBE, MBE) and was ranked #6 in the engineering sector on Inc. Magazine's 2023 Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies. This role is based with the company's India operations and supports its US-based commissioning teams.
This India-based role is the engineering backbone for our US commissioning team on utility-scale substation projects. The engineer should be able to perform SEL relay configuration and protection settings, interpret and review protection coordination studies, and produce the proposals, scope documents, and technical reports the US field team depends on. Working on a US-hours overlap, they act as the remote P&C counterpart to on-site commissioning engineers — turning around settings files and configuration so site teams can energize and test without delay.
Key ResponsibilitiesSEL relay configuration & settings
- Develop, configure, and validate settings for SEL protective relays (e.g., SEL-487E, SEL-411L, SEL-751, SEL-351, SEL-2440) using acSELerator QuickSet and SEL-5030.
- Build and test SELogic control equations, DNP3/IEC 61850 communications mapping, and HMI/RTAC integration points.
- Maintain settings version control and generate relay settings files, test plans, and settings sheets for field upload.
Support to the US commissioning team
- Serve as the remote P&C engineer for on-site commissioning, responding to field queries.
- Troubleshoot relay logic, wiring, and SCADA issues raised during FAT/SAT and energization; issue corrected settings and red-line markups.
- Review commissioning test results and point-to-point / end-to-end test records for correctness.
Protection coordination studies
- Should be able to interpret and review protection coordination studies
Proposals, scope & report preparation
- Prepare technical proposals, scope-of-work documents, and engineering estimates for P&C and commissioning work packages.
- Prepare study reports, settings reports, commissioning reports, and as-built documentation to client and standard formats.
- Support bid clarifications and respond to RFIs with documented technical justification.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical / Power Systems Engineering
- 8+ years of substation Protection & Control engineering experience, including hands-on relay settings work.
- Demonstrated experience configuring SEL protective relays and preparing settings files for field use.
- Working knowledge of protection schemes for lines, transformers, buses, and feeders (overcurrent, differential, distance, breaker-failure, ground-fault, reclosing).
- Strong technical writing skills for proposals, scope documents, and engineering reports in English.
- Ability to work a schedule with meaningful overlap with US time zones to support live commissioning.
- Able to read and interpret one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay panel drawings.
- SEL relays & software: acSELerator QuickSet (SEL-5030), SELogic control equations, SEL-5037 (SEL-5037 Grid Configurator / RTAC), settings management across the SEL protection family.
- Communications & SCADA: DNP3, IEC 61850 (GOOSE/MMS), and Modbus mapping; RTAC/gateway integration and time synchronization (IRIG-B, PTP/IEEE 1588).
- Location: India-based (WFH / hybrid per company policy).
- Hours: structured overlap with US time zones to support live commissioning windows; flexibility during energization and critical milestones.
- Interfaces with: US field commissioning engineers, project managers, SCADA/integration teams, and clients during technical reviews.
- Travel: primarily a remote engineering support role, with the opportunity to travel to the US a few times to support on-site commissioning or training. The company covers travel and related expenses and provides site allowances for these trips.
