Job Description

Job Profile Quality Control (QC) Engineer

Location: Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Reporting To: Project Manager

1. Role Objective

To ensure that all construction, fabrication, erection, and associated activities are executed strictly in accordance with approved drawings, technical specifications, applicable codes/standards, and client quality requirements, thereby achieving defect-free and compliant work execution.

2. Scope of Responsibilities

A. Quality Planning & Documentation

  • Study contract documents, technical specifications, approved drawings, ITPs, QAPs, and method statements relevant to the project.
  • Prepare, review, and implement Inspection and Test Plans (ITP) and Quality Assurance Plans (QAP) in line with CLIENT requirements.
  • Maintain all QC documentation including inspection reports, checklists, test records, MIRs, WIRs, and compliance statements.

B. Material Quality Control

  • Inspect incoming materials (structural steel, bolts, welding consumables, coatings, etc.) for compliance with approved specifications and test certificates.
  • Coordinate with stores and planning teams for material identification, traceability, and proper storage as per standards.
  • Raise NCRs for non-conforming materials and ensure corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

C. Fabrication & Welding Control

  • Monitor fabrication activities for dimensional accuracy, fit-up, alignment, and workmanship.
  • Ensure welding activities comply with approved WPS, PQR, and welder qualifications.
  • Coordinate and witness NDT activities (UT, RT, MT, PT) and ensure acceptance as per applicable codes.

D. Erection & Site Quality Control

  • Inspect erection activities for structural alignment, plumbness, bolt tightening (torque / tensioning), and overall stability.
  • Verify compliance with approved erection methodology and sequence.
  • Ensure proper grouting, base plate leveling, and final acceptance before handover.

E. Coating & Painting Inspection

  • Inspect surface preparation, painting, and coating works as per approved paint systems and DFT requirements.
  • Maintain records of environmental conditions, surface cleanliness, and final coating thickness.

F. Interface & Coordination

  • Coordinate inspections with CLIENT representatives, Erection contractor and third-party inspection agencies.
  • Attend quality meetings, inspections, and audits conducted by CLIENT or statutory authorities.
  • Provide technical clarification and guidance to site execution teams to avoid rework.

G. Non-Conformance & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify quality deviations and issue Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) promptly.
  • Track closure of NCRs and ensure effective corrective actions.
  • Support continuous improvement by analyzing recurring quality issues and proposing preventive measures.

3. Codes, Standards & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with relevant IS codes, AWS, ASTM, ISO standards, and CLIENT project specifications.
  • Ensure quality practices are aligned with project safety requirements and statutory norms.

4. Qualification & Experience

  • Education: Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical / Civil Engineering.
  • Experience: Minimum 58 years in QC for industrial / power plant / heavy structural projects
  • Certifications:
  • Welding / NDT awareness or certification preferred
  • ISO 9001 quality system knowledge desirable

5. Key Skills & Competencies

  • Proficiency in quality documentation and reporting
  • Effective coordination and communication with multiple stakeholders

  • Approved and implemented ITPs and checklists
  • Inspection reports and test records
  • NCRs with closure evidence
  • Final quality dossiers for handover to CLIENT
