Job Description

Job title: Quality Control Manager — Womenswear Location: Kolkata (on-site, with regular vendor unit visits) Type: Full-time Experience: 5–10 years in womenswear QC

About us

Uptownie is a womenswear brand. We design and produce in-house and through a vendor network, and we sell across Myntra, Ajio, Nykaa, Amazon, Flipkart and our own website. Our volumes are real and our quality standard is what decides whether a customer keeps the garment or returns it.

The role

We are looking for a QC Manager who can hold the quality line end to end — from fabric in-warding to the final packed carton. Not a checker. Someone who owns the standard, builds the system, and runs the team that enforces it.

You will be the person who decides whether a lot ships or goes back.

What you'll do

Measurement & fit

  • Read tech packs, patterns and grade rules, and verify that what the vendor sewed matches what we specified
  • Own our measurement charts and points-of-measure across all categories — tops, dresses, bottoms, co-ords
  • Check grading across the size set, not just the base size. Catch grade breaks before they become returns
  • Sign off on fit samples, PP samples and size sets before bulk cutting starts

In-line and final inspection

  • Set the inspection plan for every style: what gets checked, at what stage, at what sampling level (AQL)
  • Run in-line checks at vendor units — catch defects at 200 pieces, not at 2,000
  • Final random inspection before dispatch; pass / hold / reject decisions with documented reasoning
  • Fabric inspection at in-warding: 4-point system, GSM, width, shade continuity, shrinkage and colourfastness checks

Team

  • Lead and train the QC team — daily allocation, defect standards, calibration so two checkers grade the same garment the same way
  • Build the defect library: what a major is, what a minor is, what is an automatic reject
  • Make sure the team measures correctly — most bad QC is bad measuring

Vendor & accountability

  • Give vendors clear, evidence-backed rejection reports — photos, measurements, spec vs actual
  • Drive corrective action so the same defect does not repeat next lot
  • Support debit notes, rework decisions and RTV cases with proper documentation

Numbers you'll be measured on

  • Marketplace quality and fit-related return rate
  • Right-first-time percentage per vendor
  • Rejection and rework cost
  • Zero quality-related marketplace penalties or listing blocks

What we need from you
  • 5–10 years in garment QC, with real womenswear depth (knits and wovens both)
  • You can pick up a pattern and tell us whether it will sew up to spec
  • You can measure a garment properly, cold, without being told which points to take
  • You understand grading — not just add an inch, but how a grade actually distributes
  • You have run a team of checkers and held them to a standard
  • You communicate clearly enough that a vendor cannot argue with your report

Good to have
  • Worked with an external vendor / CMT network, not only a captive factory
  • Exposure to washing, dyeing, printing and embroidery defects
  • Diploma or degree in apparel / fashion technology (NIFT, ATDC, or equivalent) — useful, not mandatory if the hands-on experience is there

What we offer
  • CTC: ₹ 3-4 LPA
  • Direct ownership of quality across the entire brand, reporting straight to the founder
  • A team and a system to build, not just inherit
