We need a senior backend engineer who can own systems end-to-end — not someone who writes APIs and hands off the rest. You'll work directly with the CTO, lead projects from blank repo to production, switch between product lines as priorities shift, and use AI dev tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) as a core part of your daily workflow. Talkwisely builds AI-powered telephony platforms and call centre analytics for enterprises. We're also part of a broader technology group with product lines across energy, finance, and data intelligence. You won't be stuck on one codebase — you'll build across products, industries, and problem spaces. We don't care about your degree, your previous company's name, or your LeetCode count. Responsibilities
- Design and build scalable backend systems with Python/Django (DRF) across multiple products
- Architect and manage AWS infrastructure — EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, SQS, CloudWatch
- Own PostgreSQL end-to-end — schema design, indexing, query optimisation, migrations
- Build webhook systems (consuming and producing) with idempotency and retry logic
- Implement real-time features with WebSockets using Django Channels
- Write performant async code — Celery, asyncio, async Django views
- Configure and manage Nginx — reverse proxy, SSL, upstream balancing, WebSocket upgrades
- Lead new projects from zero: setup, architecture, deployment, and handoff
- Use agentic AI tools daily to accelerate development without sacrificing quality
- Mentor junior developers, conduct code reviews, and enforce engineering standards
- Debug and resolve production issues — performance, memory, and server health
- Context-switch across product lines and brands as priorities evolve
Requirements
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with Python and Django in production
- Strong CS fundamentals — data structures, system design, design patterns
- Production AWS experience (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, SQS at minimum)
- Deep PostgreSQL knowledge — schema design, indexing, query tuning, migrations
- Experience with webhooks, WebSockets, and async programming patterns
- Nginx configuration in production environments
- Linux command line and server administration
- Active daily usage of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot)
- Ability to independently kick-start and lead projects from scratch
