Role Overview
We are looking for a Python developer who also possesses a genuine understanding of Indian classical (Carnatic) music. This is a unique role that blends software development with musical expertise. The person will work on audio file manipulation, raga identification, and content curation tasks. There is already an existing codebase, but the right candidate will be encouraged to bring creative ideas and suggest improvements or alternative approaches.
Must-have Skills
- 3–5 years of strong, hands-on Python development experience
- Solid understanding of Carnatic music — must be able to recognize and identify common ragas
- Ability to identify raga constructs in broader contexts such as film music
- Experience with file manipulation in Python — downloading, processing, and curating audio/media files
- Creative and independent thinker — able to suggest new ideas, not just execute instructions
Nice-to-have Skills
- Formal training in Carnatic music (vocal or instrumental)
- Experience with audio processing libraries (e.g., librosa, pydub, essentia)
- Familiarity with music information retrieval (MIR) concepts
- Prior experience working in an early-stage startup environment
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, classify, and curate audio content based on Indian classical raga structures
- Write and maintain Python scripts for file downloading, manipulation, and processing
- Contribute to and improve the existing codebase, or build new solutions when a better approach exists
- Collaborate directly with the founder on product direction and technical decisions
- Work with high autonomy — deliver results independently in a remote, async environment

Someone who grew up learning or practicing Carnatic music and also pursued a career in software development with Python. This person has a personal passion for Indian classical music and can naturally hear raga patterns in everyday music. They are comfortable working in an unstructured startup environment, are self-driven, and excited by the idea of building something new at the intersection of music and technology.
