Job Description: Python Automation Developer

About the Role

We are looking for a highly capable Python Automation Developer who thrives on solving complex problems and streamlining workflows. In this role, you will not only write new automation scripts but also read, debug, and optimize existing codebases. We value logical thinking and the ability to articulate why a specific approach (e.g., multithreading vs. multiprocessing) was chosen just as highly as the ability to write the code itself.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable Python automation scripts.
  • Consume, integrate, and manage external services using APIs (CRUD operations, JSON parsing).
  • Read, comprehend, and debug existing code to identify bottlenecks and fix bugs.
  • Interact with databases using SQL to extract and manipulate required data.
  • Maintain source code quality through Git version control and participate in code review workflows.
  • Clearly communicate logic, architectural choices, and technical roadblocks to the team.

Skill Requirements & Competencies

Non-Negotiable Skills

  • Aptitude & Logical Problem Solving: Exceptional ability to break down complex problems. The ability to explain the logic behind your code is strictly required.
  • Core Python Mastery: Deep understanding of decorators (e.g., writing execution time loggers), list/dictionary comprehensions, and advanced string operations. (would be good to know packages such as heapq or equivalent which aids problem solving using pre implemented data structures).
  • Concurrency & Parallelism: Practical experience with asyncio, multithreading, and multiprocessing, including knowing exactly when and why to use each.
  • APIs & Data Handling: Proven experience calling endpoints, parsing JSON data, and working with any standard API framework (e.g., FastAPI, Flask, Django REST).
  • SQL Database Skills: Intermediate ability to write SQL queries to fetch, filter, and manipulate data. NoSQL exposure is a good to have.
  • Code Comprehension & Debugging: Ability to jump into an existing codebase, understand its flow, and efficiently troubleshoot bugs.
  • Strong Communication: Must be able to articulate technical concepts, code, approach etc. clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Intermediate Skills

  • Version Control (Git): Competent in creating/modifying repositories, branching, committing, pushing, and managing Pull Requests.
  • Command Line / Scripting: Intermediate proficiency in Bash/Shell scripting for environment navigation and basic OS-level automation.

Trainable Skills (Good-to-Haves)

We are willing to train the right candidate on these technologies if they possess strong non-negotiables.

  • LLM-based Automation: Prior experience or exposure to automating workflows using Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • Testing : Writing effective test specifications and unit test cases, validating edge cases too.
  • Ecosystem Familiarity: Experience with the Uber tech ecosystem (or similar large-scale environments).
  • Specific Code Review Workflows: Adapting to our specific internal CI/CD and review pipelines.
  • Frameworks: Frameworks are trainable only if the candidate is skilled at equivalent frameworks. (eg, you could learn fast api if the candidate already knows flask)
  • Database: The candidate should be well versed in understanding how generic queries and access patterns are designed in any of the popular RDBMS and NoSQL databases. Project specific databases can be picked up on the go.

What It Takes to Be Successful (Skill Weightage)

To thrive in this role, a successful candidate typically relies on the following blend of skills in their day-to-day execution:

  • 30% Logical Thinking & Problem Solving: Figuring out how to approach the automation challenge and fixing obscure bugs.
  • 25% Core Python & Technical Execution: Writing robust, optimized Python code utilizing async, decorators, and concurrency.
  • 20% Data & Integrations (APIs + SQL): Seamlessly connecting systems, databases, and third-party endpoints.
  • 15% Communication & Articulation: Explaining code logic, documenting processes, and collaborating with the team.
  • 10% Tooling & Environment (Git + Bash): Navigating the OS, managing deployments, and utilizing version control effectively.

Interview Prep Note for Candidates: Focus heavily on demonstrating your logical problem-solving skills and your ability to clearly articulate your thought process with structured responses. Expect a hands-on session where you will write and debug live code, specifically dealing with core Python concepts like decorators, string operations, and concurrency (knowing exactly when to use asyncio, multithreading, or multiprocessing). You will also be tested on your practical ability to interact with external systems, which includes calling APIs, parsing JSON, and writing SQL queries, alongside basic Git and Bash operations. Ultimately, we care just as much about why you chose a specific approach as we do about the code functioning correctly, so be prepared to think out loud and explain your technical decisions.
